Cricketers often take up commentary duties after retiring from professional cricket. The matter is different for Yuvraj Singh. He distanced himself from commentary duties and focused on shaping emerging Indian cricket talents. Singh, who retired from international cricket almost seven years ago, finally revealed the real reasons why he chose not to do commentary.
It is not that Yuvraj does not like commentary work; This is rather a personal issue. As a retired cricketer, he is free to play hide and seek. So, without any fear or double thoughts, the former middle-order batsman opened up during a conversation with Sportstak.
Yuvraj Singh said that this decision was from personal point of view
Without mentioning any specific person, Yuvraj Singh mentioned that he does not want to share the same room with someone he does not like personally.
The former Indian batsman claims that there were instances when some commentators crossed their limits and made personal statements about Singh during their commentary jobs. He cannot stand with those who have made personal opinions which hurt Yuvraj.
Yuvraj Singh said in the interview, “Now that I have retired, let me talk about this issue. The real issue is that the people who commented about me were not on cricket but on personal statements. I understand what you mean when you talk about the game. When you talk about the game, you always remember that.”
“I don’t want to sit with people who…”
He said, “I don’t want to sit with people who made personal comments about me. That’s the main reason why I don’t want to do commentary. Commentary is a great place to speak about the game and its development. That’s the main reason why I don’t want to do commentary.”
Further in the interview, he mentioned that before the T20 World Cup 2026, Sanju Samson, who helped India win the trophy, came to him to revive his career. Before the tournament, Samson was struggling with his form and was unsure of his place in the team. Yuvraj suggested that the top order batsmen work on their footwork.
Sanju Samson felt that he was not getting a place: Yuvraj Singh
“Sanju had reached a position where he felt that he was not getting a place in the playing eleven. I had a conversation with him in 2024 when India won the World Cup in Barbados. Sanju was not playing in that World Cup.”
The former cricketer, who groomed stars like Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, said, “I was watching his batting for 2-3 IPL seasons. I told him that whenever we get time, we will talk.”
Yuvraj further added, “So my point with Sanju was that you have to improve your footwork. If you don’t improve your footwork, you will constantly be in trouble. Scoring runs or not scoring is a different matter, but you have to improve your footwork. I gave him some ideas on how to improve it.”
