The T20I series between India and England is in its final stages along with the ODI series. India will face England for a three-match ODI series before the conclusion of the UK tour. Shubman Gill will captain the ODI team in England for the first time.
Ahead of the 50-over contest, India national cricket team’s ODI and Test captain, Shubman Gill made a comparison between Carlos Alcaraz’s drop shot and his trademark short-arm jab.
Shubman Gill sees similarities between his cricketing shot and Carlos Alcaraz’s drop shot
Gil, who watched the 2026 Wimbledon men’s semi-finals live from the field, saw some of his batting style in Carlos Alcaraz’s deceptive tennis shot. The Spaniard’s drop shot is considered one of the most effective moves in modern tennis.
Gill said, “The drop shot that Alcaraz plays reminds me of the short-arm jab in cricket. I play that shot too; it’s my trademark shot. Quick, deceptive and very effective.”

Shubman Gill told who he would like to have dinner with
Speaking on Geostar, Gill talked about his favorite players in cricket and tennis with whom he would like to have dinner. He cited Serena Williams, Roger Federer and Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and West Indies great Viv Richards as his all-time favourites.
Gill said, “There would be Serena Williams, Roger Federer and then cricketers Sir Viv Richards and Sachin sir. These are four legends with whom I would love to sit and have dinner.”
The Indian captain said, “I think the conversation will be incredible. They have all dominated their eras and have a lot to share about their journeys. It will be a dream dinner.”
When Gill was asked to name his all-time favorite tennis player, the batsman readily named Roger Federer. During his childhood days, it was Roger Federer who mesmerized Gil with his beauty.
“Roger Federer is my favourite. Growing up, a lot of people said he made everything look effortless. But when you play a game yourself, you realize how much work goes into making it look like that. People have called me effortless in cricket too, but I know the effort behind it. The beauty and grace with which Federer played was special, and that’s why I admire him,” the top-ranked batsman said.
Shubman Gill chose Carlos Alcaraz as his partner.
But if he ever got a chance to play a doubles match in tennis, he would choose Carlos Alcaraz. Shubman Gill noticed that Alcaraz enjoyed being on the court, so Gill expected a fun match with the tennis star.
“He seems like a guy who really enjoys being on the court. It will be fun to play with him. I don’t know the details, but I think I can hold my own in tennis, so it will be a fun match,” he said.
The India vs England ODI match will begin in Birmingham on July 14, with the second ODI on July 16 followed by the third and final match of the bilateral series on July 19.
