Former Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh has expressed his anger through words amid the ongoing IPL 2026 season. Yuvraj is angry with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) management because they did not consider his student Abhishek Sharma as the captain of the team.
Ahead of the season, SRH appointed Ishan Kishan as their stand-in captain in the absence of their regular captain Pat Cummins. The Australian fast bowler is undergoing rehabilitation process and is yet to play for SRH in 2026. Since Cummins is not available to play, Ishan Kishan will be in charge of leading the team from the front.
Yuvraj Singh asks Sunrisers Hyderabad to appoint Abhishek Sharma as their captain
Yuvraj Singh strongly said that the management should consider Abhishek Sharma as their captain, as the batsman is dedicated to the team, and he is well aware of the mentality of the team, as he has been with the same franchise for a long time. He also has leadership experience at the state level.
Speaking to Sportstak, Yuvraj Singh said, “Abhishek Sharma has been playing for SRH for the last 7 years and has been performing well for them. He is also captaining at the state level, but he has not got the captaincy of SRH yet.”

Why should Abhishek Sharma be the leader of SRH?
The 25-year-old opening batsman has been associated with the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise since the 2019 IPL after spending a season with Delhi Capitals in 2018. Soon moved from Delhi to Hyderabad, Abhishek, who used to bat in the middle order, appeared as an opening batsman for SRH, which was certainly a turning point in his career. Given his extended exposure as an opening batsman since IPL 2022, he has scored 1575 runs at a strike rate of 167.37.
According to the official website of the Indian Premier League, “In recent years, he has taken power-hitting to another level, striking at around 198.92 and over 190.46 for SRH.”
In the past, he also captained the state cricket team of Punjab in domestic matches. Ahead of IPL 2026, there was speculation that SRH may appoint Abhishek Sharma as their new captain. In fact, Ishan Kishan, who led Jharkhand to success in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament for the first time, had the responsibility on his shoulders and Sharma got the responsibility as Kishan’s deputy.
SRH will have to make a comeback without Pat Cummins
For now, rather than being bothered by debates over the team’s captaincy, Sunrisers Hyderabad should focus on their performance, especially after losing to Royal Challengers Bangalore in this season’s Indian Premier League opener.
In the first match of the league, defending champion RCB easily defeated SRH. In that match, Ishan Kishan performed well as an individual batsman, but as a team they failed to impress.
Without the services of Pat Cummins, the bowling part of the team was not strong enough to keep up with the defending champions. As long as Cummins remains out of the playing eleven, the management will have to find a way to keep its bowling unit in shape.
