England’s Test head coach Brendon McCullum has opened up about his working relationship with captain Ben Stokes amid growing scrutiny of the team’s recent performances. McCullum and Stokes have faced criticism from former players and pundits after disappointing results in red-ball cricket.
The pressure on England’s leadership group has increased after the 4-1 Ashes series defeat at the hands of Australia earlier this year. McCullum and Stokes will now look to get England back on track during a crucial home summer, which begins with a three-match Test series against New Zealand at Lord’s on June 4.
I think Ben Stokes and I have worked brilliantly together – Brendon McCullum
Brendon McCullum defended his working relationship with Ben Stokes and said the two have built a strong partnership over the last four years. The England head coach said that honest and sometimes challenging discussions are a natural part of their relationship.
McCullum said, “You’re never going to agree on everything? I think Stokesy and I have worked brilliantly together over the last four years. During that time, we’ve consistently had strong conversations and that’s because we respect each other.”

During the recent five-match Ashes series against Australia, Stokes faced a difficult period with the bat. The England captain scored 184 runs at an average of 18.40 and strike rate of 36.58. However, he made a strong impact with the ball and took 15 wickets at an average of 25.13.
Disagree, commit and move forward together – Brendon McCullum on working with Ben Stokes
Brendon McCullum said that disagreement is a natural part of any successful leadership partnership. The England head coach said that although he and Ben Stokes do not always share the same opinion, after taking decisions they remain united and focus on taking the team forward.
“We both share the same vision about where we want to take this team. If anything, this last period has given us a clear direction as to how we will operate as captain and coach. Fundamentally, we just want what is best for the team and for all the fans who support English cricket.”
“It’s OK if Stokesy and I disagree on things sometimes. That’s life and that’s how it works. But once you decide on a direction, you disagree, commit and move forward together. That’s what we’ve done and that’s what we’ll continue to do.”
England look to move on after disappointing Ashes campaign
England’s 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia has increased the pressure on Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes ahead of a crucial domestic season. The team faced criticism for inconsistent performances, questionable selection decisions and inability to adapt to Australian conditions.
The series exposed a number of weaknesses in England’s approach, particularly against high quality bowling attacks and in critical match situations. The England management remains committed to the attacking style of cricket that has delivered notable successes since McCullum and Stokes joined forces in 2022.
He has repeatedly said that he will continue to support his offensive philosophy while making necessary adjustments based on recent lessons. England will now turn their attention to the three-match Test series against New Zealand starting on June 4 at Lord’s.
