Indian cricketers welcomed the New Year by connecting with fans online, sharing warm messages and celebratory moments on social media. Shubman Gill posted a video reflecting on the mix of challenges, learning moments and major achievements of 2025 that have shaped his journey as India’s Test and ODI captain.
With no matches scheduled, India’s men’s cricketers used the New Year holiday to relax with family and friends after a successful season, which also included winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This break gives them a chance to rest and reset ahead of a challenging year ahead, including the T20 World Cup in February-March.
You were really special to me-Shubhman Gill
Shubman Gill shared a rewind clip from last year, which shows moments both on and off the field. He described last season as meaningful and full of learning and said he plans to take those experiences with him into 2026.
Gill wrote, “2025, you were truly special to me. So many lessons, experiences and memories to be grateful for. Taking it all forward into 2026.”
Shubman Gill’s mixed performance in all formats in 2025
Shubman Gill had to go through a year of ups and downs in international cricket. He suffered his biggest setback in T20I. After consecutive low scores, he was dropped from India’s T20I squad and missed the domestic T20 World Cup. In 2025, he scored 291 runs in 15 T20I innings at an average of over 24, without any half-centuries.
Gill excelled in the longest format, especially on the tour of England. He scored 754 runs in five Test matches at an average of 75.40, including four centuries, with a career best of 269 runs. Overall, he scored 983 runs in nine Test matches at an average of 70.21, with five centuries to his name.
Gill scored 490 runs in 11 ODIs at an average of 49.00, which included two centuries and two fifties. He played a key role in India’s Champions Trophy win by scoring 188 runs, which included a century against Bangladesh. This year was also special because Gill became India’s Test and ODI captain.
Shubman Gill’s performances have been inconsistent since his return to T20I
The 26-year-old has been left out of India’s squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup after his inconsistent performances in the T20Is. The right-handed batsman also lost his vice-captain role. Gill made a comeback to the T20I team during the Asia Cup 2025 and was made the vice-captain under Suryakumar Yadav.
Since his return, Gill has had to struggle for runs. In the Asia Cup 2025, he scored 127 runs in seven matches at an average of 21.16 and strike rate of 151.19. He scored 132 runs at an average of 44.00 and strike rate of 136.08 in the five-match T20 series against Australia.
Recently his form further declined in the South Africa series. Gill could score only 32 runs in three matches at an average of 10.66 and strike rate of 103.22. Due to these figures, the selectors decided to drop him from the T20 World Cup team.
