“You can’t play this against RCB”

London Spirit batting coach Dinesh Karthik shares a light-hearted moment with South African batsman Dewald Brevis during a training session in The Hundred 2026. Dinesh Karthik offered to teach Brewis a new shot to add to his batting, but jokingly asked him not to use it against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.

London Spirit trained at Lord’s on 22 July ahead of their opening match of the 2026 season. The London-based team will take on Manchester Originals at Lord’s on Thursday, July 23. Notably, the franchise has hired the entire RCB coaching staff including Mo Bobt, head coach Andy Flower and Dinesh Karthik.

Dinesh Karthik jokes about teaching Dewald Brevis a new shot

During London Spirit’s training session at Lord’s, Dewald Brewis spent time batting in the nets before chatting with Dinesh Karthik. The South African batsman told Karthik that he wanted to add a new shot to his game and asked for his help.

Brewis revealed that he tried to hit the shot while practicing with a bowling machine during his younger days. The batsman said he would love to master it under the guidance of Karthik during his time at London Spirit.

“When I was younger, I used to try it in the nets with the bowling machine. I would love to.”

Karthik agreed to help Brevis learn the shot but he also added a condition. The former India wicketkeeper jokingly said that Brevis can use the shot against any team except Royal Challengers Bangalore.

“We will work on it when we have time. It will be a good shot to add to your armoury. But the only condition is that you cannot play it against RCB. Apart from that, it is fine.”

Dinesh Karthik will remain the batting coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Dinesh Karthik hinted that he is likely to remain the batting coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore. Soon after Karthik retired from his playing career, he signed a contract as the batting coach and mentor for RCB ahead of the 2025 season.

Earlier this month, several unconfirmed reports claimed that Chennai Super Kings were considering Karthik to replace Stephen Fleming as head coach. The speculation gained attention after CSK ended Fleming’s long and successful tenure with the franchise.

No official announcement has been made. Karthik’s joke also caught the attention of fans as Brewis represents Chennai Super Kings, one of RCB’s biggest rivals in the IPL’s popular “Southern Derby”.

London spirit brings together RCB’s coaching team

London Spirit have strengthened their coaching setup by bringing in several key members of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s support staff ahead of The Hundred 2026. The franchise has partnered with the IPL 2026 champions to improve their performance.

Head coach Andy Flower and batting coach Dinesh Karthik have taken charge of the team. RCB’s director of cricket Mo Bobat, scout Malolan Rangarajan and team analyst Freddy Wilde also joined the squad.

London Spirit will be hoping that the new coaching group can turn their fortunes around this season. They will begin their The Hundred 2026 campaign on Thursday, July 23 against Manchester Originals at Lord’s, with the match starting at 11:00 PM IST.
