Young opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal has confirmed his place in Team India’s Test team with his performance. Many believe it is only a matter of time before he becomes a regular across all formats, replacing veteran batsman Rohit Sharma in the ODI opening pair with new captain Shubman Gill.

Jaiswal scored 175 runs in 258 balls including 22 fours in the first innings of the second and final Test against West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. However, he has got limited opportunities in the shorter formats, having played 26 Tests, just one ODI and 23 T20Is for India so far.

The left-handed batsman has been included in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia, but was not selected for the T20I series.

Rohit Sharma left the post; Shubman Gill takes over as India’s ODI captain

Rohit Sharma recently resigned as India’s ODI captain, leading to speculation over his future in international cricket. He has already retired from Tests and T20Is and will now focus only on the 50-over format.

Young opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal has also been included in India’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. The three-match series will begin in Perth on October 19, with the remaining matches in Adelaide on October 23 and Sydney on October 25.

Rohit has an excellent record in Australia, having scored 2,407 runs in 46 ODIs at an average above 57, including eight centuries. Earlier this year, he played a key role in India’s victory in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is becoming Gautam Gambhir’s favorite.

Times of India journalist Pratyush Raj was asked who would inform him about the decision regarding the possibility of Rohit Sharma being rested for the ODI match. He said that the final decision on Yashasvi Jaiswal will come at the time of toss.

Raj told that Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to open with Shubman Gill. He also highlighted Jaiswal’s growing relationship with Gautam Gambhir and described him as a favorite of the former India opener, who gives him special attention compared to other players.

Pratyush Raj said, “I think we will know at the time of the toss.”

“I am told that Yashasvi Jaiswal is slowly becoming Gambhir’s favourite. He treats him in a way that no other player does. When Rishabh Pant is around, it is different, but Jaiswal is like Gambhir’s favourite. So, I would not be surprised.”

Rohit Sharma’s record as ODI captain

Rohit Sharma became the full-time captain of India’s ODI team in December 2021. He had previously led the team as a stand-in captain in tournaments such as the 2018 Asia Cup and established himself as one of India’s most successful white-ball leaders.

Under his captaincy, India achieved notable successes, including winning the 2023 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. The team remained undefeated until the ODI World Cup final, where they lost to Australia by a narrow margin.

Rohit then led India to victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy, cementing his reputation as a strategic and effective leader. He captained India in 56 ODIs from 2017 to 2025, registering 42 wins, 12 losses, one tie and one no-result.
