The newly introduced Bronco Tests will not decide the future of experienced icons like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as they are ready to return to India with Australia Tour later this year. Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are now active in ODI cricket only.

There was a time in Indian cricket when the Yo-Yo Test decided the future of a player. Under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, it was clear that if a player failed in the Yo-Yo Test, he was out of the team, no matter how big the name he is. BCCI set a minimum qualifying score 16.5.

The yo-yo test was a test of both speed and endurance, where players had to run a shuttle back and forth with a timer, covered a distance like 1,200 meters in 6 minutes and close to 2 kilometers in 12 minutes.

This test calculated everything, including the players’ endurance, stamina and recovery ability. For years, the Yo-Yo test became the final criterion test for players’ fitness.

But over time, questions have been raised about the test, as each player has a different type of body, different strengths and different weaknesses. Some argued that Yo-Yo was very difficult and did not reflect the entire picture of fitness, and the numbers were reportedly eaten.

Bronco Test takes over in Indian cricket

And now BCCI introduced Bronco Test, a fitness test that came directly from the world of rugby. This test is far more difficult and far more tireless than the yo-yo test. Unlike Yo-Yo test, where players get some rest during shuttles, Bronco does not give any chance to breathe.

Players just have to run a nonstop, at a certain speed and distance. It is designed to see how long the players can push their body under pressure without breaking. Many fitness trainers call it a “top-oriented” test because it shows real endurance.

Now, the big question is that what will happen if the players fail in Yo-Yo or Bronco Test? Well, a Revsports journalist revealed that the players would not be rejected even if they fail to the Yo-Yo or Bronco tests, which means that there will be no effect on the selection of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be considered for selection, even if they enter a low score. Instead, these numbers are taken as an indicator where you stand physically. The number will only show the fitness of a player, the level of progress, and in which areas it needs to be improved.

There is no threat to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s return to India in the Bronco Test

In fact, in the last few months, even some of the qualified Indian cricketers have decreased in Yo-Yo test. These are players who are among the most qualified players, as the journalist has claimed. He said that fitness tests are no longer “pass or failed” in the Indian cricket team.

There may still be a “benchmark number”, but it is not used as “selection criteria”. The Bronco Test is now seen as everyone, which is about the ability of the players to maintain the body for the long seasons of international cricket, not only a score.

Therefore, if a player fails Yo-Yo or Bronco, it does not mean that he will not be chosen for the team. This means that he has to work hard, improve his conditioning, and show that he is capable of handling the piece. These tests are now used as a remedy for discipline, not as the final selection criteria.
