Will Shubman Gill play the second ODI against England? latest fitness updates

India national cricket team captain Shubman Gill is expected to be available for the second ODI against England at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff after allaying injury concerns suffered during the series opener at Edgbaston. Gill, who played a match-winning innings before retiring hurt, later indicated that the matter was not serious.

The visiting team will enter the second ODI with a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and will be eager to win the match. With Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah back together in the ODI setup, India finally look settled after enduring tough T20I series against Ireland and England.

Shubman Gill fitness update ahead of India vs England 2nd ODI

India feared the worst for some time when Shubman Gill retired hurt after suffering a right leg problem during his innings at Edgbaston. The incident happened soon after he and Shreyas Iyer stitched a century partnership that put India firmly in control of the match.

Shubman Gill was seen holding the back of his right leg before taking off his gloves and leaving the field, raising concerns that the injury could be more serious than simple cramping. His retirement came soon after Josh Tongue tested him with persistent probing deliveries, forcing Washington Sundar to come to the crease.

Fortunately for India, the situation now looks much less worrying. Gill later confirmed that he was expected to be fit for the second ODI, allaying fears over the availability of one of India’s most important batsmen.

The BBC also reported that the Indian captain indicated that he should be ready for Cardiff after suffering a retired injury in Birmingham, suggesting that the problem is not expected to keep him out of the remainder of the series. Meanwhile, several Indian media houses have reported that Gill is fit and good to go.

Shubman Gill has also returned to familiar surroundings in Cardiff. Before becoming India’s captain across all formats, he briefly represented Glamorgan as an overseas player in September 2022, appearing in three matches for the Welsh county. That experience will help him settle in quickly at Sophia Gardens.

Additionally, Shubman Gill is inching closer to Daryl Mitchell’s No. 1 ODI ranking.

Will Gurnoor Brar play the second ODI against England?

Another fitness concern of India is related to fast bowler Gurnoor Brar. The right-arm pacer was unable to complete his final spell after having his run-up stopped before the 48th over during the first ODI, forcing Axar Patel to finish the over.

There has been no official update on Gurnoor Brar’s status, although India have adequate cover if required, with both Arshdeep Singh and Prince Yadav available as replacement pace options.

Since Shubman Gill is expected to make a timely recovery and there are no major concerns regarding the rest of the team, India are unlikely to make changes purely for tactical reasons.

Conditions should favor another entertaining contest in Cardiff. Forecasts predict warm, breezy weather with temperatures reaching 28 degrees and no significant risk of rain. The pacey outfield has generally produced good batting conditions in recent years, with scores of 280 or more being crossed in six of the last eight full innings at the venue.

India’s playing XI for the second ODI against England (expected)

Assuming that Shubman Gill has been declared fully fit, India will hope to retain the winning combination from the opening ODI. The captain should continue to open the batting with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli will remain in his traditional No. 3 position and Shreyas Iyer is expected to handle the middle-order responsibilities.

KL Rahul is likely to continue as the wicketkeeper, while Washington Sundar and Axar Patel provide batting depth along with spin options. The presence of Shivam Dubey gives India the additional fast bowling all-rounder they need in the absence of Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Jasprit Bumrah will once again lead the fast bowling attack after an impressive comeback in ODI cricket, with Prasidh Krishna expected to retain his place. The only possible change could come if Gurnoor Brar is unavailable. In that situation, either Arshdeep Singh’s left-arm variety or Prince Yadav’s extra pace can make it into the playing eleven without disrupting the overall balance of the team.

Despite England’s excellent record at Sophia Garden, history also favors India. England have won 10 of their 14 completed ODIs in Cardiff since 2010, making it one of their strongest venues. However, India have had notable success there and have won three of their four ODIs at this ground. Their wins over Sri Lanka and South Africa during the 2013 Champions Trophy campaign, followed by a dominant win over England in 2014, underlined their comfort at the venue.
