Team India batsman Rohit Sharma is reportedly considering representing Mumbai in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) starting from November 26. However, there has been no official confirmation from the veteran opener or the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) regarding his participation in the tournament.

Rohit has retired from T20I and Test cricket and is available for India only in the ODI format. His next innings for the national team will be in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa starting on November 30. Despite a poor start to the series, the right-handed batsman was named Player of the Series in Australia.

The 38-year-old cricketer got off to a slow start with just eight runs in Perth. However, Sharma found his rhythm in the second ODI and scored 73 runs. He saved his best for the final match in Sydney, where he scored a brilliant unbeaten 121 to lead India to a nine-wicket win.

The experienced opening batsman scored 202 runs in three innings at an average of 101. His century and consistency despite the series defeat were the biggest positives for India. His aim will be to represent the team at the 2027 World Cup on the African continent.

Rohit Sharma considering playing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Mumbai

In a video shared by RevSportz on X, Rohit Juglan said that Sharma is considering playing some Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches. Juglan said nothing is final yet, but the opening batsman wants some competitive game time as part of his preparation.

“There are some reports that I am hearing right now. I can’t confirm it completely, but he might play some Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches. Still, I can’t say it with 100 percent certainty,” Juglan said.

“But yes, he is considering it as part of his preparation, just to get some game time. He is trying to see if he can participate in one, two, three or even none of the matches. At the moment, I can’t confirm anything, but I can say he is thinking in that direction.”

Rohit Sharma at the Center of Excellence before South Africa ODI

Rohit Sharma started his stint at the Center of Excellence with two days dedicated to fitness work, Rohit Juglan said. Sharma turned his focus to batting practice and spent the last several days facing a mix of fast bowlers and spinners.

Juglan said, “The first few days before Rohit Sharma’s presence at the Center of Excellence, he was completely focused on fitness. In the last three to four days, he has focused his attention exclusively on batting. About three to four fast bowlers and the same number of spinners are bowling to him.”

“Sharma has been training in the 3pm slot and spending a few hours facing pace and spin to sharpen his batting ahead of his return to competitive cricket.”
