“Next year something has to give at some level and it won’t be a Test match or an ODI World Cup. I will take very close calls and work with the franchises to see what makes sense. Things can change. I have had a few injuries, so I don’t really want to dwell on anything,” Cummins told The Age.
The statement made it clear that although Cummins has not ruled out IPL 2027, international commitments will ultimately determine his availability.
Test cricket and World Cup remain top priority
Cummins further stressed that Australia’s major tasks would be prioritized over franchise cricket. The fast bowler believes he may need a break before heading into another Ashes battle after the challenging India tour.
“The priorities for me are always Test matches and the ODI World Cup. I dare say that if I play all over India, I will need a bit of a break before a very tough Ashes series.” added Cummins.

“Yes, it is possible. I think we are quite open-minded towards anything, as we have seen over the last few years. Be it a home Test or an overseas Test, we don’t look at them any differently. A Test match is a Test match.” The Australian captain explained.
The Australian captain also indicated that if the team feels that recovery time before an important series would be more beneficial, some bowlers could be rested in the latter stages of overseas tours. Such a strategy would help Australia keep its premier fast bowlers fresh for major competitions while reducing the risk of injuries.
“I see a world where we’re potentially reducing some bowlers, even at the end of the Indian series, saying if it doesn’t look like they’re going to play, they’ll be given extra rest before the Ashes.” Cummins said further.
Notably, the 33-year-old is currently recovering well after a significant groin strain issue, which caused him to miss four Ashes Tests during the 2025-26 Australian summer and also ruled him out of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
