Contrary to speculations, it has now been reported that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi will not be traveling to India for the ICC Board meeting in Ahmedabad.
This meeting will be held over two days, 30 and 31 May. The final of IPL 2026 is also going to be held on May 31 in Ahmedabad. All those present at the board meeting will also be expected to attend the IPL final.
Mohsin Naqvi will not go to India
Mohsin Naqvi played a key role in ensuring that the PCB, BCCI and ICC reached a three-way agreement regarding the participation of both countries in ICC events hosted by either.
Last year at the Champions Trophy, it was decided that the cricket teams of India and Pakistan would not travel to each other’s countries for ICC tournaments until 2027. India did not travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, instead playing all their matches in Dubai. Similarly, Pakistan played all its matches in Sri Lanka for both the Women’s ODI World Cup and Men’s T20 World Cup held in India.
According to PTI report, now Mohsin Naqvi himself has decided not to go to Ahmedabad.
Mohsin Naqvi was not called for IPL final
The PTI report also mentioned that, contrary to reports in the Pakistani media, Moshin Naqvi was not personally invited to the IPL final by the BCCI. If Naqvi had come to India, he would have come only to attend the board meeting and not for the IPL final.
Apart from Mohsin Naqvi, two other ICC board members will participate in the meeting via video conference. The ICC has always allowed representatives of member boards to attend meetings virtually if they cannot do so in person.
If Naqvi participates virtually, it will be in line with ICC’s standard practices.
ICC board meeting postponed and postponed
Originally, the ICC Board meeting was scheduled to be held in Doha, Qatar in late March. But the USA-Iran war forced the ICC to not only postpone the meeting but also move it.
Now this meeting will be held in Ahmedabad after about two months from its original date. In an interview with RevSportz earlier this month, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal had said that the ICC Board meeting being shifted to Ahmedabad was one of the reasons why the BCCI decided to shift the IPL final there from Bengaluru.
Now I am also expected to attend the ICC board meeting.CC Board of Directors, Chief Executive Officer, committee members and senior leadership of the apex body.
Reportedly the biggest agenda was broadcasting rights, as ICC’s deal with JioStar is set to expire in 2027.
Originally, the ICC had released an official statement as to why the board meeting was scheduled in Doha.
“The meetings will bring together the ICC Board of Directors, Chief Executives, Committee Members and senior leadership as part of the organisation’s ongoing governance calendar, providing an important opportunity to discuss key matters relating to the present and future of the global game,” the ICC said in an official release.
It added, “The decision to hold the meetings in Doha reflects the ICC’s growing involvement with cricket in Qatar and the country’s wider sporting ecosystem. Cricket in Qatar, with the ICC’s support and collaboration with the Qatar Cricket Association and the Olympic Committee, has fueled remarkable progress for the sport in recent years.”
