The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced Stephen Fleming as the new head coach of the Test team. However, he will be unable to play a role from the upcoming series against the Pakistan national cricket team, which is scheduled to begin on August 19 and run till September 13, with three Test matches scheduled.
Stephen Fleming will take charge of the team from the South Africa tour in December. Until then, Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach. Joe Root has also returned as Test captain after Ben Stokes retired from international cricket after the New Zealand series last month. Fleming has a wealth of coaching experience around the world.
Why will Stephen Fleming not take charge of the Pakistan series?
Stephen Fleming will not take charge of the Pakistan series as he will spend time with his family in New Zealand after completing a long coaching stint with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and their associate franchises. He left the Super Kings franchise earlier this year after serving them for almost 18 years.
Stephen Fleming does not get much time to spend with his family due to IPL, SA20 and coaching in various leagues. This is why the ECB has allowed him to spend some time with his family before assuming the role of head coach. He will fly to the UK later this summer to begin preparations for the South Africa Test tour.
