The growing standoff between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) over venue security concerns in India has turned the situation into a real threat of Bangladesh pulling out of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Relations between India and Bangladesh are turning sour due to attacks on Hindu minorities in the country. Due to this, BCCI ordered Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to drop them from the team for the upcoming IPL 2026. And Bangladesh took this call as an insult.
Following the Mustafizur Rahman episode and security concerns raised at the government level, Bangladesh have decided not to travel to India for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026 and instead insisted on playing their matches in Sri Lanka, the joint host of the mega event.

Currently, Bangladesh are placed in Group C along with West Indies, England, Italy and Nepal. Three of those group matches are scheduled for the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, while the remaining games are scheduled for the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
With Bangladesh refusing to play in India, the ICC is under immense pressure to find a solution that does not disrupt the entire event. Although the ICC has three possible ways to handle the situation, the timing of the decision will play a big role in which one is realistic.
Scenario 1: ICC’s middle ground
The best possible solution is for the ICC to agree to Bangladesh’s demand and shift its group matches to Sri Lanka while keeping the remainder of the tournament as planned.
This would protect the 20-team format, and they would not need to make major venue adjustments. However, this could create a nightmare for fans, broadcasters and other teams’ schedules.
Scenario 2: Expropriation and a breakaway group
The second scenario plays out if the ICC refuses to move the games and Bangladesh still chooses not to travel to India for the tournament. In that case, the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 could continue by “awarding” Bangladesh’s matches to their opponents.
As per the rules, West Indies, England, Italy and Nepal will be declared winners and awarded points even without playing, while Bangladesh’s campaign will be declared dead.
Scenario 2: Sporting Nightmare
The third and most extreme outcome would be a complete withdrawal by Bangladesh. The move will put the ICC in a difficult position, as the governing body will have to either find a replacement at short notice or allow the tournament to proceed with the forfeited fixtures.
Changing a team will maintain the competitive balance, but it becomes more complicated as the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is just a few weeks away. If replacement is needed, the process is not straightforward, and it will be a headache for the governing body.

Fears of turmoil at T20 World Cup as ICC has no ready replacement
There is no fixed backup team for the T20 World Cup. If Bangladesh withdraws, the ICC will itself select a replacement considering recent form, how qualified the teams are, how quickly they can travel, and whether they can easily fit into the schedule.
Scotland is one of the strongest Associate teams, and they have also replaced World Cup squads in the past. Scotland stepped in after Zimbabwe withdrew in 2009. But the 2026 qualifying results make the decision more complicated.
In the Europe regional finals, the Netherlands and Italy qualified and Jersey finished above Scotland. If the ICC strictly followed qualifying results rather than prestige, the jersey could be chosen. Other teams may also be considered, but the ICC may prefer a team that can participate in the tournament without travel or scheduling problems.
