South African all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy finally got the moment he was waiting for as he scored his maiden Test century on the second day of the ongoing second and final Test against India at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

Senuran Muthusamy reached this milestone by scoring two runs off the ball of Mohammed Siraj. The Indian fast bowler bowled a short ball outside the off stump, and the Proteas star quickly moved onto his back foot, timing the shot beautifully and slotting it into the gap near sweeper cover.

A big smile on his face highlights his pure relief and pure joy of reaching that milestone. Inside the dressing room, the South African players and support staff clapped loudly and celebrated the all-rounder’s achievement against India.

Senuran Muthusamy and South Africa create rare history in Guwahati Test

With this century, Muthusamy has created history for South Africa. The left-handed batsman became the third South African player to score a Test century while batting at No. 7 or lower against India. Before him, only Quinton de Kock, who scored a brilliant 111 at Visakhapatnam in 2019, and Lance Klusener, who scored an unbeaten 102 at Cape Town in 1997, had done so.

After Muthusamy’s century, Marco Jansen also scored a half-century before the lunch break on the second day in Guwahati. With this, South Africa created a rare history against India. For the first time, two South African batsmen ranked No. 7 or below scored 50+ runs in the same innings against India.

In fact, in the last 13 years, only one other touring team has done something similar in India, and that is England when Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid both crossed the fifty mark at the Chepauk Stadium in 2016. With this milestone, South Africa’s lower order showed how tenaciously they can fight even against one of the toughest bowling attacks in world cricket.

Senuran Muthusamy saves twice, puts South Africa in a strong position Guwahati

The Proteas star has been batting brilliantly and is hardly making any mistakes in Guwahati. Although India had two genuine chances to dismiss Muthusamy, luck was on his side, and he is sure to take his team to a dominant position in the ongoing final Test in Guwahati.

The first chance came when the 31-year-old was given out LBW, but UltraEdge produced a short spike that saved him from Ravindra Jadeja’s delivery. The second chance came when Muthusamy tried to play a hook shot against Jasprit Bumrah, but missed the top edge and fell safely in front of fine leg.

South Africa’s current score at the lunch break is 428/7.
