With his hat-trick, Shepherd became the 10th player overall to achieve the feat in T20 World Cup history. The first hat-trick in the tournament was taken by Australian fast bowler Brett Lee, who had set the benchmark in previous editions.
The last T20 World Cup in 2024 saw three hat-tricks, two by Australian captain Pat Cummins and one by England fast bowler Chris Jordan. Shepherd’s effort now adds a proud West Indies chapter to that distinguished list.
Shepherds won the West Indies match by taking five wickets
Shepherd’s heroics did not end with the hat-trick. He claimed five wickets and became the best bowler of the match. Scotland, who were in a good position at 114 for 3 after 13 overs while chasing 183, completely lost momentum after Shepherd’s explosive spell.
From a competitive position, Scotland were all out for 147 runs in just 18.5 overs, and could not recover from the sudden loss of wickets.
Earlier in the match, West Indies made a competitive score of 182 runs for 5 wickets After being asked to bat first. The innings started with a ferocious middle attack from Shimron Hetmyer, who scored a half-century in 22 balls.
After a relatively quiet start, Hetmyer’s counter-attack changed the momentum decisively, ensuring that West Indies put enough runs on the scoreboard to exert pressure during the chase.
