Sophie Devine leaves Melbourne Renegades injured in chase
Chasing 185, the Renegades faltered early and never fully recovered. Opener Deandra Dottin was caught out by Freya Kemp off the bowling of Chloe Ainsworth after scoring 2 runs for 5 runs in the opening over.
Captain Devine then decisively turned the game around with the ball and demolished the Renegades’ top order. She removed Courtney Webb (0), Sophie Molyneux (17) and the dangerous Alice Capsey (12), and returned quick figures of 4/25. His double strike in the powerplay restricted Renegades to 34/4.
There was a brief rebuild through Nicole Faltom (28 off 22) and Georgia Wareham (43 off 32), who added 65 runs for the fifth wicket, but the required rate rose rapidly as the Scorchers’ spinners tightened their control.
Alana King, who had impressed with the bat earlier, delivered an equally impressive spell, taking 2/29, dismissing both Faltam and Wareham to break the Renegades’ last meaningful partnership.
With the overs ending, the contributions from the lower order Tess Flintoff (10 off 19) and Naomi Stallenberg (16 off 17) were not enough. Renegades eventually closed at 154/9, 30 short of the target.
