5.5 magnitude earthquake hits parts of bangladesh But Third day of the ongoing second test between Bangladesh and Ireland Play at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka was temporarily stopped and chaos broke out in the stands. The tremors were felt at around 10:38 am local time, sending players, umpires and spectators running for safety.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Madhabadi, about 40 km east of Dhaka, causing widespread panic in the stadium. Both dressing rooms emptied as players and officials quickly walked onto the field in search of open space. Fans in the spectators’ gallery were seen restlessly looking for a way out, with many opting to leave the stadium. The media center located at the northern end of the stadium was also evacuated rapidly.
Some players were seen looking upwards towards the floodlights, worried that they might be shaken by the tremors. According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake, which also affected parts of Kolkata and Guwahati, was reported as a 5.7 magnitude quake, and was felt across Bangladesh and most parts of northeastern India.
Play resumed after a three-minute interruption, with Ireland’s score at 165/5 in the 56th over. Despite the initial shock, play continued as the players recovered their composure. Ireland lost two more wickets during the resumed session, and by lunch on the third day, they were 211/7 in reply to Bangladesh’s total of 476. While the earthquake caused a temporary disruption, players and officials quickly refocused, and play continued in a tense but determined atmosphere.
