Wasim Khan suddenly out of Jay Shah’s ICC team!

The Jay Shah-led International Cricket Council is set to undergo a major reshuffle in its administrative structure as Wasim Khan is reportedly set to step down from the post of ICC General Manager, Cricket after four years in the role. Khan took up the post in 2022 following the departure of Geoff Allardyce in May that year.

As Wasim Khan is all set to take up a new role, the International Cricket Council will have to announce a new name for the post. Before joining the council as General Manager, he was an important part of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as CEO for almost three years.

Wasim Khan has completed several high-profile projects for ICC

Khan, a former cricketer, has had an illustrious career in various administrative roles in the past. Currently the General Manager of Cricket at the International Cricket Council and formerly the PCB CEO, he also served as the CEO at Leicestershire County.

As an ICC official, he had to deal with many challenges as cricket has changed rapidly over the years. With more T20 and T10 format matches around the world, the job as General Manager of Cricket for the ICC has become more challenging than ever before. Despite the challenges, she has also performed well in the Future Tours Program (2023-27) and the first women’s FTP.

“One of the main challenges during Wasim’s tenure at the ICC was a rapidly expanding cricket schedule, with more T20 and T10 leagues replacing international cricket. But in the last Future Tour program (2023–27), which was finalized during his time, the volume of international cricket actually increased. The women’s FTP was also unveiled for the first time during this period,” ESPN Cricinfo reported in a report.

Khan had an impressive domestic career as a batsman

Meanwhile, Wasim Khan was the first British-born Muslim to play county cricket. He played for Warwickshire in the mid-to-late 90s. The former left-handed batsman played 58 first-class matches and 30 List A matches. He played those List A matches for Warwickshire, Sussex and Derbyshire. His most memorable stint as a batsman came with Warwickshire when they won the title in 1995.

Several other officials have also left the council in recent days.

The report further states that Wasim Khan’s tenure as General Manager of Cricket at the ICC will end at the end of June, with a new job likely to take over in July. Over the past few years, a number of senior ICC officials have left the council, including Allardyce, Chris Tetley (head of events) and Alex Marshall (head of the anti-corruption unit).

The report further said, “Wasim Khan will finish the job at the end of June and is set to take up another role from July. His exit follows the departure of a number of senior ICC officials over the past two years, including Allardyce – who was replaced by Sanjog Gupta as CEO – Chris Tetley (head of events) and Alex Marshall, who led the anti-corruption unit. Tetley has been replaced by Gaurav Saxena and Marshall has been replaced by Andrew Ephgrave.”
