Washington Sundar uproots Alex Carey’s stumps with a lethal ball in Adelaide ODI

India’s national cricket team’s young spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar uprooted the stumps of Australia’s national cricket team’s star wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey on Thursday, October 23.

Washington Sundar took the wicket of Alex Carey at a crucial time during the second ODI of the three-match series between the India national cricket team and the Australia national cricket team at the Adelaide Oval.

Alex Carey failed with the bat against India, Washington Sundar out

34-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey returned to the Australia ODI playing eleven in the second match against India in Adelaide.

He missed the first match of the series due to Sheffield Shield duty and was replaced by Josh Phillippe. Phillip impressed everyone with his inning of 37 runs and played a key role in Australia’s spectacular victory.

However, Phillips was replaced upon the return of Alex Carey to the setup. When Australia was chasing the target of 265 runs in 50 overs, the expectations from Carey were very high.

However, the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman disappointed his team with a poor batting performance against the Shubman Gill-led side. He came to bat at number 5 and was clean bowled by Washington Sundar in the 27th over.

On the last ball of the over, Washington Sundar bowled a full 95 kmph ball to Carey, which went for a poor sweep shot. Carey came down and was in a hurry to sweep, due to which the ball went past his bat and went past the stumps. Alex Carey returned to the pavilion after scoring 9 runs in 17 balls.

Shubman Gill flopped badly with the bat

Gill’s captaincy career in all formats has not had a good start. He has lost his first match as captain in T20Is, Tests and ODIs and becomes the second Indian after Virat Kohli to achieve this unwanted feat.

After becoming full-time Test captain, Gill lost his first match, but overall performed exceptionally well with the bat in the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy against England.

Shubman Gill finished the series as the leading run-getter with 754 runs at an average of 75.40, when no other batsman could even touch the 600-run mark. Also, India was successful in drawing the five-match Test series 2-2.

However, his debut as an ODI captain has been more dreadful. Apart from losing the first match, he also flopped badly with the bat and returned to the pavilion after scoring only 10 runs.

It was expected that Gill would return in the second match and lead the team from the front, but it did not happen. In the 7th over itself, the Indian ODI captain was dismissed by Xavier Bartlett after scoring 9 runs in 9 balls.

On the first ball of the 7th over, Xavier Bartlett bowled a brilliant delivery to Gill on the off-stump and the Indian batsman charged down the track with an aim to hit it over mid-off.

However, Gill was not able to make good connection with the ball and bowled it straight to mid-off to Mitchell Marsh, who took a good catch.
