There was a heated argument between Washington Sundar and David Miller during the drinks break of South Africa’s innings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Team India captain Suryakumar Yadav and the umpire reached the spot to calm down the moment.
On Sunday (February 22), India faced South Africa for their opening match of the Super 8 match of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Both teams qualified for this stage of the tournament as group toppers of their respective groups.
Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh took three early wickets
Before the match, the defending champion and co-host of the 2026 T20 World Cup, Team India, was considered a strong contender to win the match. However, many cricket experts predicted that the Proteas had enough firepower to break India’s unbeaten streak in the competition.
After winning the toss, South Africa came to bat first. In the early stages of the first innings, the Indian bowlers were on top of their game, thanks to fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh.
Both fast bowlers dismissed the top 3 batsmen of the South African lineup early. While Bumrah took the wickets of Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton, Singh took the wicket of South African captain Aiden Markram.
South Africa bounced back on time
After the dismissal of 3 batsmen, Dewald Brewis, whose form was under scrutiny before the match, and experienced batsman David Miller pulled the team into the contest. Brevis missed the half-century by only 5 runs. The emerging batsman scored 45 runs in 29 balls with the help of 3 fours and three sixes. At the other end, Miller scored 63 runs off 35 balls, followed by Tristan Stubbs who scored 44 not out.
The situation became tense during the drinks break of the innings after the 14th over when a heated exchange broke out between Indian spin bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar and Miller. Both the cricketers were seen hurling words at each other. The matter calmed down after the intervention of Yadav and the umpire.
How did Washington Sundar and David Miller get themselves into this situation?
But how did he find himself in this situation? It is believed that Miller, who was at the non-striker end, was repeatedly going out of the crease, which might have forced Washington Sundar to make some comments on the opposing batsman. In response, the batsman also did not decide to step back.
Washington Sundar got a chance to play the important match against South Africa in place of vice-captain Axar Patel, who is another spin-bowling all-rounder in the team.
Sundar’s inclusion did not prove to be effective enough for the Men in Blue, as he failed to take a wicket despite giving away 17 runs at an economy rate of 8.5 after bowling only 2 overs. Despite the initial setbacks, South Africa made a good comeback and scored a total of 187 runs in 20 overs.
