Former national cricket team player Sanjay Manjrekar has shared his adventurous views on the non-selection of star batsman Shreyas Iyer in the Asia Cup 2025 squad.
Sanjay Manjrekar said that he was absolutely surprised to see Iyer not cut in ODI cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 despite showing incredible looks.

The BCCI Selection Committee did not remember Iyer to the T20I squad despite its recent heroes, and fans and experts were surprised by development.
In 2025, Iyer has seen a separate animal and is at the peak of his powers. He shone brightly in domestic cricket, took his red form in the ICC Champions Trophy, and then displayed a major batting performance for Punjab Kings in the recent edition of IPL.
Many experts felt that it was a certain-shot selection in the Asia Cup 2025 squad, but Ajit Agkar-led panel took a separate route and preferred to remember Shubman Gill at the T20I squad instead.
Speaking about Iyer’s selection, former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar said in a video shared on his official Instagram handle:
“Shreyas Iyer is not making this T20 squad in India for the Asia Cup, it is just shocking. It is a person who was left out of the Indian team for the right reason because he felt that he was not doing himself for domestic cricket.
In particular, Iyer was earlier told about the concerns about leaving domestic matches and their fitness after being out of the Indian Test squad from BCCI Central Contracts. However, he returned to domestic cricket, made extraordinary performances, and re -achieved the contract.

Sanjay Manjrekar said that Iyer was the best batsman in IPL 2025 as he scored more than 50 runs on an average and a strike rate of more than 170.
Manjrekar felt that the selectors made an explosion by combining the formats and raising Shubman Gill at Shreyas Iyer as the latter showed a better T20 performance while Gill looked great in Test cricket.
“He did not do one leg wrong in that return chain and then took that form to IPL cricket. I think no batsman has done that form in the IPL season, an average over 50, strike rate more than 170, and being a game-changer with bat.
“So, when you do this for a player who has placed one of the best performances in the last few months, for which the Indian team is being selected, and you leave him out of that format, this is for a person who has excelled in a completely different format. Shreyas Iyer,” he said.
All I have is that is devoid of cricketing logic – Sanjay Manjrekar
In the same video, Sanjay Manjrekar said that he has seen the tendency of mixture formats of the selection committee while choosing the players, which does not mean. he explained:
“This is something that I have seen for years, not recently: This trend of selectors is a tendency to choose a player based on performance in one format, where the person excelled, and then raised him for another format.
“When I see that a player is rewarded for the performance of his Test match by being placed on the T20 side, I think the cricketing is devoid of logic. It’s not just no meaning.”
