Virat Kohli missed a century, but created history with his match-winning innings.
Well, the former Indian captain went out and did what he does best. Chasing India’s tough target of 301 in the first ODI, Kohli took charge of the innings and played a calm, classy innings. Kohli looked to be on his way to another ODI century but fell short by just seven runs. He was caught at mid-off by a New Zealand long bowler on 93 runs.
While chasing the target, he scored 93 runs on 91 balls while playing beautiful cover drives and straight shots. His innings helped India win the match by four wickets and take a 1-0 lead in the ongoing three-match ODI series against New Zealand.
During this innings, Kohli reached two big milestones. He became the fastest player in cricket history to score 28,000 international runs across all formats. He also moved up to second place in the list of all-time international run-scorers and is now just behind Sachin Tendulkar.

How many runs does Virat Kohli need to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record?
Kohli is getting closer to one of the biggest records in cricket history, but the challenge before him is still big. After his recent inning of 93 runs, Kohli now has 28,068 runs in international cricket. He has reached this milestone in just 624 innings, which clearly shows how consistent he has been over the years.
Till now he has scored 84 centuries and 146 half-centuries at the highest level. Sachin Tendulkar ended his great career with 34,357 international runs, which he scored in 782 innings across Tests, ODIs and T20Is. He holds the all-time record for most international runs and centuries with 100 centuries and 164 fifties.
Currently, Kohli is 6,289 runs behind Sachin’s total score. This is a huge difference, and the task becomes even more difficult as Kohli now plays only ODI cricket, as he has retired from Tests and T20Is. These days, teams don’t play many ODI matches in a year, which means Kohli will get fewer chances to score big runs.
The chances of Kohli breaking that world record are very slim. As for the distant dream, Kohli will have to stay fit, score consistently and play for 4-5 years to reach there. However, right now it is safe to say that Tendulkar’s great record is safe, and that too for many years.
