Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) wicketkeeper-batsman Shreevats Goswami has shared an emotional post on Instagram amid the India national cricket team’s struggle in Test cricket.
Shreevats Goswami said legendary captain Virat Kohli should have continued playing his favorite format as he made India a dominant force in red-ball cricket.
Ideally, Virat Kohli should quit playing ODIs – Shreevats Goswami
The great modern-day batsman Virat Kohli is currently active in international cricket as a player of only one format, as he has already retired from Test and T20I cricket.
Kohli plays only 50-over matches for the India national cricket team, and was last seen in action on the Australia tour, where he recorded back-to-back ducks before scoring a half-century in the Sydney ODI.
Virat Kohli will be seen in action in the upcoming home ODI series against the South Africa National Cricket Team, but before that his decision of Test retirement has been termed as wrong by his former teammate Shrivats Goswami.
Amid India’s poor performance in the ongoing Test series against the Proteas, Shreevats Goswami said that Test cricket misses Virat Kohli a lot and he should continue playing in this format.
“Ideally Virat should have quit playing ODIs and continued playing Test cricket until he had nothing to give. Test cricket misses him. Not just as a player but the energy he brought, the love and passion of playing for where he made the team believe they could win in any conditions. #INDVSA,” Shreevats Goswami wrote on X.
Notably, Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on 12 May 2025 after an illustrious career from his debut on 20 June 2011 to 3 January 2025 (his last Test match).
He is getting a chance to bat at number 4. Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli used to bat at number 4 – Parthiv Patel on Dhruv Jurel
In a recent conversation on Star Sports, the former India gloveman criticized young batsman Dhruv Jurel, who was batting at No. 4 in the Guwahati Test, saying that he played a poor shot against Marco Jansson to get out for a duck in 11 balls.
The cricketer turned commentator said, “Even though the tea break was not close, this shot was not on. He deserves to play as a batsman because he has scored a lot of runs. However, here, he was not in control at all. Normally, when the ball is outside the right shoulder of a right-handed batsman and you try to play it on the leg side, you are not in control. That ball mostly goes in the air and that is what happened here too.”
He said, “Secondly, when you are playing Marco Jansen, you have to take into account the extra bounce because he is very tall. He has missed his third chance in a row. He is getting a chance to bat at No. 4. Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli used to bat at No. 4. Shubman Gill is batting at No. 4 now. He has scored a lot of runs as well.”
Pull shot is Dhruv Jurel’s strength – Cheteshwar Pujara
Meanwhile, Cheteshwar Pujara admitted that the pull shot is Dhruv Jurel’s strength but said that the youngster should plan carefully as to which bowler to execute that shot against.
“The pull shot is Dhruv Jurel’s strength. However, when it is your strength, you also have to understand which bowler you are playing that shot against. You can still understand his getting out twice in the first match because the wicket was not that good and he was batting under pressure,” he said.
