Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has not managed to convince anyone with his batting performances in the last 18 matches. His average has been below 15 and his captaincy has also seen a serious decline. Varun Aaron has said that he needs some runs before the ICC T20 World Cup.

India will be playing their final match in the South Africa home series as they already lead the series by a 2-1 margin. However, the Proteas will not give up easily, especially after the last game was abandoned due to excessive fog on the ground.

The South Africa series holds special significance for the Indian team because of the return of all-rounder Hardik Pandya, and also because the teams are preparing for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Varun Aaron believes, “If Suryakumar Yadav scores runs, there will be a big change in confidence.”

India is winning the match, but the Indian captain is not contributing with the bat. This has been the only matter of concern for the Indian team ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup. Many believe that Shubman Gill’s form is not a matter of concern compared to Surya, as the captain is irreplaceable.

Former Indian fast bowler Varun Aaron has said that Suryakumar should finally score some runs, which will boost his confidence ahead of the World Cup.

Aaron said on Star Sports, “I think Suryakumar Yadav is going to focus on scoring runs because he really needs some runs. If Suryakumar Yadav scores runs, there will be a big change in confidence because runs have not come from his bat for a long time, not even from the bat of Shubman Gill.”

“When we talk about the T20 World Cup, these two are the key batsmen in our setup and if they score runs, the Indian team will be absolutely bullet-proof,” Aarons said.

“If your win record as a captain is 83 percent, you know you are doing a lot of things right” – Varun Aaron

However, all those who have criticized Suryakumar Yadav’s poor form with the bat have praised his great resolve as the captain of the Indian team. Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, India has not lost any bilateral series and has a win percentage of 83%.

Varun Aaron also said that when a captain manages to win 83% of the games, he has obviously done something right, especially considering the situation when two of the greatest players in the team have recently retired.

“It just shows that you have great cricket skills, and you also have confidence in the boys. Yes, Suryakumar Yadav is not scoring as many runs as we would like him to score, but I think he will perform well at the right time,” Aarons said.

Suryakumar Yadav has only 6 T20Is left before ICC T20 World Cup

Team India and Suryakumar Yadav have only 6 matches left in the ICC T20 World Cup. Suryakumar Yadav will lead India in the final T20I against South Africa and 5 more matches in the shortest format of the game against New Zealand.

Varun Aaron, who believes Surya is just an innings away from getting his form back, has observed that the Indian captain is not maintaining his lackluster form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

“It’s not that Suryakumar Yadav is completely out of form. If you look at his Mushtaq Ali figures, he averaged 41 and his strike rate was also good. I think he is just one innings away from regaining his form,” he said after Suryakumar Yadav scored 165 for Mumbai at the SMAT 2025 just before the South Africa series.
