The Bihar state government presented a check of Rs 50 lakh to Vaibhav Suryavanshi on Sunday, February 22. The 14-year-old batsman attended a felicitation program at the Chief Minister’s residence, where he received the prize money.
Vaibhav received the check in the presence of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary and Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh.
A sparkling evening in Patna
According to media reports, on this occasion, Sports Department Secretary Mahendra Kumar, Bihar State Sports Authority Director General Ravindran Shankar and other senior officials, Bihar Cricket Association representative Rakesh Tiwari, Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s father Sanjeev Suryavanshi, brothers Ujjwal and Ashirwad Suryavanshi and Abhijeet D’Souza were also present.
It was a reward for a successful Under-19 ODI World Cup campaign, where the budding batsman stepped up and led the team to lift the trophy. This was India’s sixth Under-19 World Cup title. Ayush Mhatre was the captain of the team, but the Bihar-born player remained in the headlines due to his excellent form throughout the tournament.

In the summit clash of the competition, where India faced England Under-19, Suryavanshi registered a stunning century in the winning effort. He needed only 55 balls to complete his century, which amounted to 175 runs off 80 balls, which included 15 fours and sixes. It was also one of the best innings in the history of Under-19 World Cup and Under-19 ODI cricket.
