Ravichandran Ashwin praised Daryl Mitchell for his strong stand against Usman Tariq’s stoppage in bowling action, while the Pakistan spinner has hit back at the Indian legend through his Instagram story.
The India vs Pakistan fiasco also involves a battle between two spinners from the neighboring country. New Pakistani spinner Usman Tariq and former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin have been clashing with each other.
The incident happened once during the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, while it flared up again later amid the recent brawl between Rawalpindi batsman Daryl Mitchell and Quetta Gladiators’ mystery spinner Usman Tariq.
Daryl Mitchell vs Usman Tariq controversy in PSL
A new controversy has arisen regarding the match between Quetta Gladiators and Rawalpindi in Pakistan Super League. The Gladiators spinner’s unique stand was contested by opposition batsman Daryl Mitchell.
When Usman Tariq used his usual pause during the middle overs of the game between Rawalpindi and Quetta Gladiators. Daryl Mitchell was frustrated with his trademark prolonged stutter and hence, he was out twice in the same over.
This caused a major furore and Mitchell himself claimed after the game that if the bowler had the right to stop in the middle of the action on several occasions, he could do the same. Criticizing the bowler, he claimed that this kind of thing can happen not in international cricket but in street cricket.
Ravichandran Ashwin praises New Zealand cricketer for his firm stand against Tariq
During the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin claimed that batsmen should have the freedom to deviate from their stance if they feel frustrated by strange interruptions in their bowling action.
He claimed that if the break is not consistent, the batsman has every right to walk away. He also claimed that the timing of stopping his delivery depends on the umpires and match referee.
He also praised Mitchell’s actions in the PSL match between the two teams. He further stressed that captains and opposition batsmen should raise the issue with the match referee and umpires.

Usman Tariq demands penalty run for Daryl Mitchell’s controversial conduct
Usman Tariq has not shied away from heavy criticism this time, as he has strongly opposed Daryl Mitchell’s actions and the support given to the NZ batsman by the former Indian spinner.
He has defended his own actions and claimed that if such actions were repeated deliberately by batsmen, umpires should have the discretion to warn the batsman and issue a dangerous penalty to the batting side.
He wrote in his Instagram Story, “Unsporting Conduct: If the batsman does this repeatedly to deliberately distract the bowler or waste time, it can be considered unsportsmanlike play. The umpire has the discretion to warn the batsman, and if this continues, issue a penalty (usually 5 penalty runs to the fielding side).”
