The Chennai heat turned the IPL 2026 match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals (DC) into a dramatic spectacle as Tristan Stubbs and Nitish Rana seethed with anger over the umpire’s call at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, April 11.
In the high-voltage chase against Chennai Super Kings, the Delhi Capitals camp faced frustration, anger and a major controversy, and the hosts eventually won the game by 23 runs.
DC players are struggling due to unbearable heat in Chennai
Conditions at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium were very poor, with humidity so high that players were struggling to stay on the field. Sweat was continuously dripping, the jersey was completely wet and holding the bat while chasing the target was becoming a big challenge for the batsmen.

Amidst all this, Tristan Stubbs (60 runs on 38 balls) was trying his best to keep Delhi Capitals in the game. Along with him, David Miller (17) was also seen completely exhausted, he even splashed water on his face during the break to stay fresh in the extreme heat.

But the real drama happened in the 19th over when the match reached the turning point. Stubbs, who was well prepared and fighting hard, asked to change gloves because it had become too wet to handle. This affected his grip and control on shots when his aim was to finish the game for DC.
Outside the boundary, Karun Nair was ready with new gloves. But the umpires intervened and blocked the request, saying the change was not allowed at that time as it could slow down the match. This moment changed everything for Chennai Capitals.
Nitish Rana lost his temper on the fourth umpire
Nitish Rana came forward to talk to the fourth umpire and tried to explain that playing with wet gloves in such circumstances is very difficult and also unsafe. But the officer did not change his decision. Even during the argument, Rana lost his temper at the umpire and used abusive language.

Stubbs nevertheless continued, showing great fight and determination. The South African all-rounder scored a fighting 60 and kept Delhi Capitals’ hopes alive till the end. But right after the glove incident, things changed dramatically.

What do the rules say?
IPL rules state that batsmen must be ready when the bowler starts running in to bowl, and they are not allowed to change their equipment mid-over if this slows down play.
