Australia’s debut opening batsman Travis Head has blamed a compelling Ashes schedule as the reason for missing the remainder of the BBL season with the Adelaide Strikers as part of ICC T20 World Cup selection.
The biggest rivalry in the longest format of the game is between Australia and England. Travis Head has spoken about the immense mental strain the Ashes took on him. He has told that he will take some time off after the Ashes before coming to India for the ICC T20 World Cup.
Head was part of all five Ashes matches, as he played a major role in Australia’s success in the first three matches of the series. Head started batting at no. Scored 5 runs in the first innings and was then promoted to open the innings for Australia.
Travis Head to miss BBL season after Ashes due to excessive workload
Travis Head opened the innings for the first time in the second innings of the Perth Test, where he led the Australian batting innings with a brilliant century. Travis Head has scored 437 runs for Australia in 4 matches with two centuries in Perth and Adelaide.
Before making the switch from Test to T20 cricket, Travis Head opted to take a break from cricket, as Head may opt out of participating in the Big Bash League. He admitted that he needs some time in January before heading to the ICC T20 World Cup in India.
When Head was asked about his possible participation in the BBL season, the Australian opening batsman replied, “It’s not likely given the emotional fallout of the Ashes series and everything that’s going on in terms of the World Cup,” Head told The Daily Telegraph when asked if he would be taking part in the BBL with his team Adelaide Strikers.
Head focused on ICC T20 World Cup 2026
Currently, the Adelaide Strikers are in a very strong position in the Big Bash season and would love to add the experience of Travis Head to the top order. However, with the T20 World Cup around the corner, Head has shifted his focus to the ICC T20 World Cup.
Travis Head will play a very important role for Australia in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in India along with Mitchell Marsh at the top of the batting order.
Head said of his Ashes series so far, “You go into every series wanting to make a good contribution. I felt like I got close to that and played really well. And to actually be in an Ashes series and play in that is always emotionally difficult.”
Travis Head has family on his mind ahead of busy schedule in India
Head expressed concern over how much cricket some players are asked to play. A condensed and tiring schedule paired with franchise tournaments leaves no room for personal time with the family. Hence, Head has expressed his desire to spend time with his family before traveling to India for the T20 World Cup, which will be followed by the IPL with Sunrisers Hyderabad.
“So I think it’s important to go into the World Cup fresh, but we’ll see where we end up. It’s a concern given how much we’ve already played and how much time we’ve got on the road,” Head said.
Even the 2027 World Cup cannot be ignored after such a compelling schedule in 2026. He said, “You also look at that year (2027) with the young family… My mind is more with my family. How can I make that year work?”
