Australia began their Ashes 2025-26 campaign with an impressive eight-wicket win over England as Travis Head turned the first Test into a one-man show at Perth’s Optus Stadium. With Usman Khawaja out due to a minor injury, Travis Head got a chance to grab all the headlines.
Chasing a difficult target of 225 on a tough Perth surface, Head opened the innings with debutant Jake Weatherald, while Marnus Labuschagne was placed at number three. The left-handed batsman started cautiously and took a few overs to adjust to the pitch and bounce.

Once Head settled in, he took charge, hitting every loose ball and handling the shorter balls with ease. After this, Head gave severe punishment to the England bowlers and completed his half-century in just 36 balls.

Following Australia’s stunning win against England in the first Ashes Test, Head has shared an interesting story behind his incredible innings. While the head opening act with Weatherold in Perth surprised many, the plan was not made suddenly.
The aggressive batsman revealed that Marnus Labuschagne was also considered for the role, but the team trusted him to handle England’s short-ball strategy. He said it was a decision he had discussed many times and worked perfectly for him in Perth.
Travis Head reveals how he got opening role in Ashes opener
“Almost two years ago! (laughs) No, to be honest, I was happy to do it. It doesn’t bother me too much. We talked about it – we know what England’s short-ball plans look like; we saw a lot of it in 2023. The coaching staff and Patty (Pat Cummins) had a few ideas, and this was one of them. It felt good to have that today,” Travis Head said at the post-match presentation. It worked.”
The star batsman said it was a collective decision taken by head coach Andrew McDonald, captain Pat Cummins and senior players like Steve Smith.
Head further explained, “Some of everyone – the coach (Andrew MacDonald), the captain, some of the senior players. There were a few options thrown in the room. I was keen, and there was support for it too. Marnus could easily have faced the first over. But the thinking was right: go out there, trust the plans, and see what happens. And today it paid off.”

Travis Head described Perth’s innings as one of his best innings
Ultimately, Head counted his Perth innings among his best, and he was happy to be able to give Australia a perfect start to the Ashes series. However, the 31-year-old batsman joked that it would be a disappointment for the 60,000 fans expecting another day of action in Perth.
He concluded by saying, “Yesterday wasn’t a very good day for us; today was a bit of a mess at times… so to get a win like this in two days is huge. I almost feel sorry for the 60,000 people who bought tickets for yesterday.”
