A fun moment in the 20th match of the ongoing IPL 2026 has now turned into a costly mistake for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batsman Tim David. The Australian star’s slightest antics on the field landed him in trouble after RCB’s 18-run win over Mumbai Indians.
The whole drama started in the 18th over when Tim David hit a powerful six off Hardik Pandya during the RCB innings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The hit was so strong that the ball was damaged and even wet, so the umpires decided to replace it.
Tim David’s fun gets him in trouble after RCB’s win over MI
When the box of replacement balls arrived, David picked one up and started having fun playing with it. The umpire asked him to give it back repeatedly, but the RCB batsman continued playing with the ball and was seen teasing the match official during the live game.

The umpire did not like what the RCB batsmen were doing, as a small delay was enough to upset him. However, he later returned the ball to the umpire. Interestingly, Rohit Sharma also joined the moment and had a laugh with David.

But after the match, the match officials took this incident seriously. He upset the umpires after inspecting the ball during the match on Sunday (April 12). Since David did not immediately follow the umpire’s instruction, he was penalized as per the rules by the IPL Governing Council.
Tim David fined for ‘disobeying umpires’ instructions’
Tim David has now been fined 25% of his match fee for not following umpire’s instructions during RCB’s match against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. An official announcement is expected soon.

Aakash Chopra condemns Tim David incident
Earlier, former Indian batsman turned commentator Aakash Chopra criticized David during the match and made it clear that such behavior of players is not allowed on the field.

Chopra said on-air: “As a batsman, you are not allowed to do that. He can’t check the ball. And if the shape of the ball is a problem, it is because you have hit a six on it.”
RCB beats MI in Wankhede
Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bangalore made a strong comeback after a crushing defeat to Rajasthan Royals. RCB’s top order was completely successful with half-centuries from Virat Kohli, Phil Salt and Rajat Patidar helping them post a mammoth total of 240 runs on the board against MI.
Mumbai Indians tried hard to chase this target but could only reach 222/5. Sherfane Rutherford played a brilliant inning of 71 not out off 31 balls, but the match was already out of hand when MI were reduced to 154 for 5.
With this win, RCB moved to third place in the IPL 2026 points table with six points from four matches, while MI are struggling at eighth place with just one win. RCB will next face Lucknow Supergiants on April 15 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
