Tilak Verma’s place in India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2026 plans has suddenly come under serious doubt as head coach Gautam Gambhir plans to make a major change for the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa. Gautam Gambhir is reportedly pushing for a surprise replacement due to Shubman Gill’s injury.

At present, the biggest concern for the Indian selectors is the availability of Shubman Gill. As India’s T20I vice-captain, he was expected to play a major role in the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa, especially since the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is just a few months away.

Tilak Verma is in trouble as Gautam Gambhir has insisted on being an unexpected replacement for the South Africa T20 due to injury to Shubman Gill.

But Gill’s injury at the last moment has created a situation of confusion. India’s Test and ODI captain is suffering from a hamstring injury and as per the medical plan drawn up by the BCCI staff, he still needs at least a full five weeks of rest before returning to training, reports ESPN Cricinfo.

The Punjab player has already reached the BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru to continue his rehabilitation, which shows that the situation is serious and the selectors will not rush his return. Given this, there is little chance that he will be fit in time for the upcoming T20 series against South Africa.

This situation has pushed the Indian selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar to a very important meeting in Raipur. They will meet on Wednesday, December 3, during the second ODI between India and South Africa at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur. Gautam Gambhir is also likely to attend this meeting.

Riyan Parag ready to return to India with South Africa T20I

A report in ESPNCricinfo suggests that Riyan Parag is being considered for a surprise inclusion in the 15-man squad for the T20I series against the Proteas. Despite his recent poor form with the bat, the name of the Assam captain has generated a lot of interest among the selectors.

In the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025, Parag has struggled badly, scoring only 5, 15, 14 and 0, and Assam have also lost three of those matches, which makes the call even more surprising. Even in IPL 2025, Parag could score only 393 runs and scored only one half-century.

Despite all this, Parag fits the all-rounder style that Gautam Gambhir prefers. Gautam Gambhir likes players who can multitask on the field and Parag’s ability to bowl useful overs makes him a valuable option on Indian pitches despite his consistent struggles.

Ryan Parag, Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal in contention for T20I selection

Parag has already represented India in nine T20 matches, in which he has scored 106 runs and taken four wickets. His last game for India was against Zimbabwe in July 2024. Now, Parag may add to his numbers, but this whole situation is putting pressure on Tilak.

With Gill injured and Parag coming into talks, the competition for middle-order spots has become tight, and Tilak’s position is no longer secure.

It is also being said that after Gill’s fitness concerns, the names of Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal are being considered for the upcoming T20 series against South Africa. On the other hand, Hardik Pandya is ready to make a comeback with the upcoming T20 series on home ground.
