The 35-year-old batsman has represented the Black Caps in 93 T20Is, scoring 2,575 runs at an average of 33.44, including 18 half-centuries.

Williamson, widely regarded as one of the most patient and technically gifted players of his generation, captained New Zealand in 75 T20 Internationals, leading the team to two T20 World Cup semi-finals (2016 and 2022) and the 2021 T20 World Cup final, where he played a captaincy knock of 85. His calm leadership, tactical acumen and consistency with the bat earned him global respect on and off the field.

In his retirement statement, Williamson said the decision was a conscious one, emphasizing that it was the “right time” for both him and the team.

“It’s something I’ve loved being a part of for a long time and I’m so grateful for the memories and experiences.” Williamson said. “This is the right time for me and the team. It gives the team clarity ahead of the series and their next major focus which is the T20 World Cup.

“There’s a lot of T20 talent there and the next term will be vital to getting the cricket out of these guys and getting them ready for the World Cup. Mitch is a fantastic captain and leader, he’s really come into his own with this team. Now is the time to push the Blackcaps forward in this format and I’ll be supporting from afar.”

“I care so deeply about this team,” He added. “The Blackcaps are a special place and you want to dedicate yourself to it and get the most out of yourself. It’s a journey and a discovery, and that’s what I love about the international game and this environment. I will continue to keep the lines of communication open with Rob and NZC who have given me a huge amount of support.”

Williamson’s focus is on Test and ODI cricket
