Current T20 World Champion, team indiaare facing one of their most disappointing stretches in recent years, after suffering consecutive bilateral T20I series defeats ireland And England. This is the first time in seven years that India have lost two consecutive men’s T20 series, raising serious concerns about the team’s approach in overseas conditions. After suffering a 2-0 defeat against Ireland, India failed to respond in England, where the hosts took an unassailable 3-0 lead with a thumping win in Bristol, with one match still to be played.
The disappointing performance has prompted Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Announcing a comprehensive performance review involving both players and coaching staff, led by the head coach Gautam Gambhir. With the ODI series against England starting on July 14, there is increasing pressure on the Indian camp to stop the decline and find a way to win quickly.
Mohammad Azharuddin warns India to move ahead with IPL mentality
former captain of india Mohammad Azharuddin has offered a sharp assessment of India’s struggles and warned the team that success in England demands a completely different mindset to what players are experienced with. Indian Premier League (IPL). Speaking to ANI, Azharuddin stressed that the English conditions highlight technical shortcomings and punish overly aggressive batting.
“England is completely different. It is not like playing in the IPL. The sooner the Indian team realizes this, the better. In the IPL, when you play, you try to hit almost every ball out of the park. But that does not happen here because the ball swings, the conditions are different and the wicket has bounce.” Azharuddin said.
He pointed out that England’s bowlers successfully identified India’s weaknesses and consistently exploited them throughout the series.
“The England bowlers have really figured out how to bowl to each batsman. We have to work really hard. It’s not a very good performance, but I’m sure they will learn. Two defeats against Ireland and then three defeats in a row. It’s not a good sign for the Indian team. I hope they learn very quickly and at least show some pride in the next game.” Added Azhar.
Azharuddin’s comments reflect a growing belief that India’s ultra-aggressive batting philosophy, which has evolved in franchise cricket, requires greater flexibility when faced with swing-friendly overseas conditions. England’s disciplined pace attack forced the Indian batsmen into frequent mistakes by extracting movement from the surface and taking advantage of the extra bounce.
India needs strategic changes before the ODI series
India’s recent struggles show that a more balanced approach is necessary if the team is to make a rapid comeback. Instead of sticking with the all-out aggressive template, the batting unit should focus on building innings, rotating the strike and honing quality bowling during the tougher phases of the game. The responsibility also falls on Gambhir and his support staff to offer a practical “Plan B” for challenging overseas situations. Building partnerships, minimizing unnecessary risks and giving batsmen time to settle could prove vital in restoring confidence.
BCCI’s upcoming performance review is expected to examine both individual performances and broader strategic decisions. Questions related to Shreyas Iyer’s leadership, team selection and strategy of resting many experienced players simultaneously on important foreign tours are also likely to come under scrutiny.
The focus will now turn to the ODI series starting on July 14, where India have a chance to respond positively. The demands of 50-over cricket are vastly different to T20, so the team will have to change their mindset quickly, while out-of-form players may need to rework domestic cricket to address technical shortcomings against swing and seam movement.
