Former India captain Rohit Sharma displayed a brilliant batting performance during the third and final ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney on Saturday, October 25. Rohit, who faced criticism after failing in the first ODI, silenced the critics with back-to-back impressive performances.

After losing the toss and opting to bat first, the team captained by Shubman Gill bowled out Australia for 236 runs in 46.4 overs. Fast bowler Harshit Rana was the best among the Indian bowlers with four wickets. Off-spinner Washington Sundar brought India back into the game by dismissing two key players including Matt Renshaw and Matthew Short.

Rohit Sharma completed his century on the last ball of the 33rd over, with Virat Kohli at the other end. The two rebuilt an old partnership while continuing to put pressure on Australia.

Rohit raised his bat to welcome the applause of the Sydney audience. He was wearing his helmet but Kohli hugged him warmly. Head coach Gautam Gambhir also stood up to celebrate Rohit’s achievement.

Rohit and Virat Kohli made a partnership of more than 130 runs and put the team in a strong position to win. Playing second fiddle at the other end, Kohli also scored a half-century.

Rohit cemented his legacy as one of the most prolific ODI openers, especially against Australia. He has scored nine centuries against the Australian team and equaled Sachin Tendulkar’s record in this format.

Rohit Sharma completed 50 centuries in international cricket

In terms of overall ODI centuries, Rohit Sharma (33) is at third place after Sachin Tendulkar (49) and Virat Kohli (51). Notably, this was also his 50th international century across all formats, a milestone previously reached only by Tendulkar (100) and Kohli (82).

Earlier in the match, Rohit became the second Indian to score 2,500 ODI runs against Australia, joining Tendulkar, who had scored 3,077 runs in 71 matches against the Australian team.

Rohit also surpassed Tendulkar’s record of scoring most ODI runs by an Indian on Australian soil. Needing 83 runs to break Tendulkar’s previous record of 1,491 ODI runs in Australia, he achieved it with his brilliant innings against the hosts.

Ahead of the Australia series, there were questions over Rohit’s future and his participation in the 2027 World Cup. He started the series with only eight runs in the opening overs. However, he made a comeback by scoring 73 runs in the second ODI in Adelaide.
