A rare incident occurred on the third day of the second and final Test match between Bangladesh and Ireland at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur on Friday, November 21. The ongoing Test match was stopped for a few minutes due to the earthquake that hit Dhaka and several parts of Bangladesh on Friday morning.
Bangladesh has strengthened its hold on the second test with a strong performance. With the help of centuries from Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim, Bangladesh scored 476 runs in the first innings. By the end of the second day’s play, the visiting team’s score was 98 runs for five wickets. Bangladesh had the upper hand in the match.
Play stopped briefly on the third day of Bangladesh vs Ireland Test
Play was briefly interrupted in the morning session on the third day. When the earthquake struck, Ireland had scored 165 runs for 5 wickets in their second innings. The umpires stopped the match and players from both teams moved towards the center of the field.
The shaking caused immediate concern among spectators and officials. Fans in the stands moved to open areas, with some leaving the venue entirely, while others congregated closer to the playing area. Dressing rooms were evacuated and media members evacuated the media center as a precaution.
It was reported that the intensity of the earthquake was measured at about 5.5 on the Richter scale, whose epicenter was near Madhabadi, about 40 km from Dhaka. Tremors were also felt in West Bengal and parts of Northeast India. Fortunately, no casualties or damage were reported.
This stoppage lasted only for a few minutes. After security checks and discussions between officials, play resumed, with commentators reporting that vibrations were felt even in the commentary box.
Play halted here due to earthquake – Cricket Ireland
The game lasted only half a minute in Mirpur before it was stopped. According to the USGS, the earthquake struck at 10:08 am Indian time, with tremors reaching Dhaka around 10:40 am.
Earthquakes that disrupt cricket are extremely rare. The last known instance before this occurred in 2022, when a Zimbabwe–Ireland under-19 match was briefly stopped due to a similar shock.

Ireland was out for 265 runs in the first innings
Ireland fought hard in the opening session and added 113 runs despite losing two wickets. Stephen Doheny and Lorcan Tucker came under pressure with the score at 98 for 5, but they took advantage of Bangladesh’s inconsistent bowling and hit several fours.
The two made a partnership of 81 runs before play was briefly stopped due to the earthquake. Ireland was all out for 265 runs in 88.3 overs. Taijul Islam took four wickets while Khalid Ahmed and Hasan Murad took two wickets each.
Earlier, Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das scored centuries, taking the hosts to 340 for 5 with a total of 476 runs. Mushfiqur brought up his 13th Test century in his 100th Test, but was dismissed by debutant Matthew Humphreys for 106.
Andy McBrine took six wickets in his second Test, while Humphreys and Gavin Hoey took two wickets each. Remarkably, all ten of Bangladesh’s wickets in the innings were taken by Ireland’s spinners.
