Tata IPL 2024 Match 56, DC vs RR – Match Report
Led by a strong batting performance that set the stage, Delhi Capitals (DC) registered a 20-run win against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. DC’s win has made the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 points table more interesting as they moved level with three other teams on 12 points.
On a ground that has produced some big scores in the Tata IPL 2024, RR won the toss and decided to bowl β supporting their batting to chase down any target. Right from the start, it was clear that big runs were going to be scored on the pitch, as DC’s openers got their team off to a great start.
Jake Fraser-McGurk was at his aggressive and entertaining best and scored a half-century in 19 balls. It is surprising that this is his slowest half-century of this season in 19 balls. He has had a similar impact on the tournament. 28 runs were scored in the fourth over bowled by Avesh Khan. Fraser-McGurk hit four fours and two sixes and completed his half-century in that over.

Soon after, R Ashwin dismissed him, hitting it straight to cover, where Donovan Ferreira took the catch. At the other end, Abhishek Porel had made a steady start by hitting a few fours early in the innings, but he took charge after Fraser-McGurk was out. Although Shai Hope was run out early, Porel was unperturbed and continued to attack the bowlers at regular intervals. Axar Patel supported him till the 10th over β when Ashwin had him caught at long-on. At the halfway stage, DC were at 115 for three and were heading towards a big total. In the 11th over, Porel completed his first half-century in Tata IPL 2024 by hitting a six off Avesh. The youngster reached there in just 28 balls.
DC slowed down a touch in the middle as they were hit by some quick wickets. Porel was caught out by Sandeep Sharma for 65 and Pant was dismissed by Chahal β who took his 350th wicket in T20 cricket. Gulbadin joined Tristan Stubbs in the middle and had to rebuild before launching into the slog overs.

The surge in the end was driven by Stubbs, who was in his typical combative nature β finding boundaries with ease. His 20-ball 41 included three fours and three sixes β two of which came in the last over of the innings, bowled by Sandeep.

The stage was set for that charge when Chahal, who was having a good IPL season, was out for 21 runs in the 18th over. Rasikh Salaam came on as an impressive batsman towards the end and hit two fours in quick succession – much to the delight of his teammates in the dressing room. DC scored 221 for eight β a good score, but considering recent history, RR also favored themselves.
For RR to reach the score, they needed to fire one of their big guns, and today, it was captain Sanju Samson who took the responsibility and played an extraordinary innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal hit a four on the first ball of the innings but was caught out on the next ball by Khalil Ahmed. Jos Buttler, who was brought in as an impact player, took some time off in the middle. This is when Samson took upon himself the responsibility of creating the environment to pursue a bigger goal.

Samson changed gears in the third over when he hit Khaleel for a massive six down the ground. this was his 200 alsoth Six in his Tata IPL career. In the next over, Ishant Sharma hit two fours and a six. DC brought on Mukesh Kumar in the fifth over and almost created a chance as Buttler skied one high in the air and was dropped by Stubbs. Samson continued the attack and took RR past fifty in that over.
In the sixth over, Buttler hit two fours, but then hit a four through the inside off Axar, leading to a celebration for DC. The next few overs saw a bit of a slump as boundaries were not easy to hit and Riyan Parag took some time to get going. At the half-time stage, RR were at 93 for two and were behind the required rate. Rasikh soon dismissed Parag for 27 runs in the 11th over.
By then Samson was on 49 runs in 25 balls. In the next few overs, Samson changed gears and increased the run-rate. He got good support from Shubham Dubey (25 off 12 balls). RR’s score in 11 overs was 103 runs for three wickets. The pair restarted the run-chase by adding 59 runs in the next 29 balls. Samson completed his half-century and then showed great aggressiveness. Mukesh eventually dismissed Samson for 86 off 46 balls when he hit a shot over long-on and was brilliantly caught by Hope – who kept his balance inside the ropes.

It was a battle to watch in the slog overs. While RR were getting boundaries, they were also losing wickets. Shubham was out for 25 when he again tried to clear the ropes during his battling innings. Ferreira, playing his first IPL innings, was LBW by Kuldeep in the 18th over. That over was decisive for DC as Kuldeep kept it very tight and gave away only four runs. On the last ball, he also got Ashwin caught at long on.
RR needed to score 37 runs in the last two overs – all eyes were on Rovman Powell. Rasikh bowled an excellent final over and conceded only eight runs, denying Powell the chance to hit a big shot.
