Tata IPL 2024 Match 55, MI vs SRH – Match Report
Mumbai Indians (MI) registered a seven-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at their Wankhede Stadium. This is MI’s fourth win of the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, and it was powered by a brilliant century from Suryakumar Yadav and crucial support from Tilak Verma during the run-chase.
As per the general trend of Tata IPL 2024, MI won the toss and decided to bowl against the power-packed SRH batting line-up. MI introduced right-arm medium pacer Anshul Kamboj into their lineup. SRH brought back the experience of Mayank Agarwal to strengthen their batting.
Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma were attacking during the powerplay and hitting boundaries at regular intervals. The real drama happened in the fifth over of the innings when Kamboj came to bowl. Head was intent on attacking and hit a six on the second ball. However, Kamboj bowled him out but it was revealed that it was a no-ball. After this Head hit a four on the free-hit and then hit another four. Just before the end of the powerplay, Jasprit Bumrah gave MI the first breakthrough when he had Abhishek (11 of 16) caught behind.
In the eighth over, Mayank was bowled out by debutant Kamboj. This was the problem with SRH’s innings as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Apart from their opening partnership of 56 runs, no other partnership crossed 50. Many batsmen got starts but could not convert them into big partnerships. When Head was out for 48 runs in the 12th over, Mumbai had got a big wicket. At one point in the 17th over, their score was 136 runs for eight wickets, forcing them to introduce batsman Sanvir Singh as an impact player.

In the end, it was Pat Cummins’ aggressive batting that helped SRH cross 170. He scored 35 runs in just 17 balls with the help of two sixes and two fours, helping SRH reach 173. The 37-run partnership for the last wicket was extremely important for SRH as it gave their bowlers something to defend. He was also happy considering the fact that KKR defended the same score against MI at the same venue. The most successful bowler for MI was their captain Hardik Pandya who took three wickets for 31 runs and Piyush Chawla also took three wickets for 33 runs.

MI’s run-chase got off to a very good start as the openers scored 26 runs inside two overs, with both Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma looking good. However, SRH then hit back by dismissing Ishan, who slipped to Marco Jansson. In the fourth over, Rohit hit a top edge and the wicketkeeper caught it. Naman Dheer was also out early when he bowled Bhuvneshwar Kumar to first slip in the fifth over. Mumbai was in big trouble at 31 runs for three wickets in the fifth over.
Suryakumar then showed his class and took matters into his own hands, showing that attack is the best form of defense. It all started with Bhuvneshwar’s drive for four runs early in the innings. When Cummins attacked in the sixth over, Tilak also joined in. At the end of the powerplay, MI’s score was 52 runs for three wickets.
When the ground spread out, it did not hamper Suryakumar’s approach as he hit two sixes and two fours off Marco Jansson to collect 22 runs in the seventh over.

After this, Suryakumar completely dominated, who did not give any chance to SRH bowlers to make a comeback. Tilak held one end and this gave Suryakumar the opportunity to express himself from the other end. Last year, Suryakumar scored his first century in the Tata IPL while batting first on this ground. This time, he dominated the run-chase and took his team home. Tilak had the best seat in the house as Suryakumar hit his best shots that day to entertain the MI fans.
It took 30 balls for Suryakumar to complete his half-century. This was followed by some aggressive T20 batting performance and he brought up his next half-century in just 21 balls. The victory was achieved when he completed his century by hitting a six off T Natarajan in the 18th over, giving MI the victory.
