Tata IPL 2024 Match 54, LSG vs KKR – Match Report

Sunil Narine’s explosive innings of 81(39) coupled with brilliant bowling and fielding efforts helped Kolkata Knight Riders to their third consecutive win and move to the top of the table after defeating Lucknow Super Giants by 98 runs in Match 54 of Tata IPL 2024 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Narine and Phil Salt (32 off 14) set the stage with a storming partnership of 61 runs in 4.1 overs. Narine then carried the momentum and scored 81 off 39 balls before crucial innings from Ramandeep Singh (25* off 6 balls) and Shreyas Iyer (23 off 15 balls) took KKR to 235/6. In-form Varun Chakravarthy (3/30) and Harshit Rana (3/24) took charge of KKR with the ball, as the visitors bowled out LSG for 137 from 70/1.

Defending 236 runs, KKR took an early lead with the help of a brilliant catch by Ramandeep Singh. Starc took the lead off Impact player Arshin Kulkarni and Ramandeep raced backwards to hit a brilliant shot. Rahul and Kulkarni played some good strokes, hitting four fours off the first nine balls, but that brilliant catch reduced the early lead.

Marcus Stoinis came on and counter-attacked, hitting a six off Vaibhav Arora and then hit three powerful fours off Starc, before hitting another six off Harshit Rana to take LSG past fifty as LSG reached 55/1 at the end of the powerplay. Stoinis and Rahul made a fifty-run partnership, while Stoinis was aggressive. With the partnership flourishing, KKR needed one wicket. This was provided by Harshit Rana as he had KL Rahul (25 off 21) caught at deep point in the eighth over. This sparked the collapse. In-form Varun Chakravarthy took two wickets in quick succession and had Deepak Hooda out LBW, who failed a review. Then Russell entered and he provided two big breakthroughs by sending back Stoinis, who top-edged his heave to backward point and edged past Nicholas Pooran on 36(21).

Narine joined the wicket-taking party as he had Ayush Badoni caught at long off. Ashton Turner hit a few sixes off Varun Chakravarthy, but he got out in a bizarre manner as he hit a six on his boot and the ball went into Chaharvarthy’s hands for a catch and was bowled out. In the next over, Krunal Pandya was caught behind the wicket by Harshit. Chakraborty got his third chance when Concussion sub Yudhvir Singh Charak was caught at point on the top-edge. Harshit Rana took his third wicket by dismissing Ravi Bishnoi LBW as KKR bowled out LSG for 137 and won by 98 runs.

Earlier, Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul won the toss and decided to bowl.

As they have done in previous matches, Phil Salt and Sunil Narine gave KKR a flying start and scored fifty runs in four overs. After taking 18 runs in the first two overs, Salt and Narine increased the pace by hitting four fours off Naveen-ul-Haq in the next over. After this, Narine attacked Mohsin Khan and scored 20 runs in the over with three fours and a six and the pair made a partnership of 50 runs. After this, Naveen made a comeback in the next over and after hitting a four on the very first ball, he got Salt (32 on 14 balls) caught behind the wicket.

Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi together steadied the ship before changing gears from the 9th over. Both of them hit a six each on a pull shot off Yash Thakur and Narine completed his half-century in 27 balls in the same over and KKR crossed 100. After hitting two fours off Ravi Bishnoi, Narine went aggressive against Stoinis and hit three sixes in the over.

Narine was lucky in the next over when he lofted a single to long-off and was caught by Devdutt Padikkal but unable to maintain his balance, he ended up on the ropes. He then attacked one and took the outside edge to short third man, where Mohsin Khan dived to his right but could not catch it. However, the KKR openers were unlucky for the third time as Padikkal took a simple catch at long off four balls later as he mistimed Bishnoi’s ball at the score of 81(39). After a few mixed overs, LSG got the big wicket of Russell as substitute fielder K Gowtham took a brilliant catch off Naveen’s bowling while running backwards after Russell lofted the ball in the air.

Yudhveer Singh Charak then came in as a concussion replacement for Mohsin Khan, who hurt himself while attempting to catch Narine at short third man and was caught by Raghuvanshi on the very first ball. LSG has clawed its way back into the competition. Rinku Singh and Shreyas Iyer took KKR past 200 before Rinku was out after scoring 16(11). After this, Ramandeep Singh played an inning of 25* runs in six balls, taking KKR to 235/6.

This was the first time that a team had scored 200 or more at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
