Tata IPL 2024 Match 53, PBKS vs CSK – Match Report
The ever-reliable Ravindra Jadeja produced a stellar all-round performance (43 off 26 and 3/20) to help Chennai Super Kings (CSK) make a strong comeback and defeat Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Match 53 of the Tata IPL 2024 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala.
After being reduced to 101/5 in the 13th over, a fighting innings by Jadeja (43 off 26) took the visiting team to 167/9. Tushar Deshpande then came roaring in, setting the tone by dismissing Jonny Bairstow and Riley Rossouw in the second over, before Jadeja bowled an impressive spell of 3/20 to help CSK restrict PBKS to 139/9 and register a crucial win.
Defending 168 runs, CSK got off to a great start courtesy fast bowler Tushar Deshpande. PBKS suffered an early blow when Deshpande clean bowled Jonny Bairstow and Riley Rossouw in the second over. CSK maintained a tight hold for the next two overs, before Shashank Singh and impact player Prabhsimran Singh relieved some of the pressure by hitting a four and a six off Richard Gleeson in the fifth over, scoring 15 runs. The duo continued the momentum in the next over, hitting a few fours and a six to give Deshpande 16 runs and take PBKS to 47/2 at the end of the powerplay.

The pair completed a fifty-run partnership when Shashank hit a boundary off Santner, but he played one too many shots and lofted the next ball to long-on and was back out for 27. Since then PBKS has completely lost its way.
In the next over, Prabhasimran bowled a ball straight to long off from Jadeja, one of which scored two runs. Impact player Simarjeet Singh announced his arrival this season by getting Jitesh Sharma caught behind in his very first over.
Simarjeet could have got two runs in two overs but Moeen Ali gave away an easy chance at midwicket on Ashutosh Sharma’s mistimed pull. Santner thought he made no mistake on the next ball as Curran slapped it to long off off Jadeja.

The CSK all-rounder conceded two runs in the over as Ashutosh mistimed his swing at short third man, leaving PBKS at 78/7. Harshal tried to take things forward by hitting a six and a four off Simarjeet, but the CSK fast bowler made a strong comeback and dismissed Harshal on the next ball, with Sameer Rizvi taking a brilliant catch. Chahar, Brar and Rabada fought hard as CSK won by 28 runs, but it was always going to be a step too far.
Earlier, Punjab Kings won the toss and decided to field. Arshdeep Singh caught Ajinkya Rahane at midwicket in the second over itself. Rahane started the over with a brilliant straight drive for four runs, but four balls later Arshdeep bowled an inswinger which swung late and Rahane flicked it straight to mid-wicket. After this, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Daryl Mitchell stabilized the proceedings and kept things moving in a measured manner. Mitchell hit a four and a six off Arshdeep and Gaikwad welcomed Harpreet Brar into the attack with a six and two fours in the final over of the powerplay, taking the score to 19 and taking CSK to 60/1. The pair made a partnership of 50 runs in 26 balls.
With the partnership going strong, Curran brought Rahul Chahar into the attack and he provided a key moment in the match by dismissing Gaikwad (32 off 21) and Shivam Dubey on consecutive balls. Both the batsmen were caught behind the wicket while trying to make a late cut.

Harshal Patel came into the attack and he also got Mitchell (30 off 19 balls) out LBW in his very first over. The batsman reviewed it after being given out, but replays showed that it had hit the leg, which was the umpire’s decision.
PBKS held on before Ravindra Jadeja hit two consecutive fours off Harshal in the 11th over and then Moeen Ali reduced the pressure for CSK by hitting two fours off Rabada in the next over. With another partnership developing, Curran brought himself into the attack and made short work of the stand by lofting a slower bouncer to Moeen at short fine leg. The boundaries once again dried up, the pressure built and Chahar came back to dent CSK once again as he had Mitchell Santner, playing his first match of the season, caught at long on.
Shardul Thakur reached the crease and took a straight attacking approach and hit a four on the first ball, but he was lucky on the second ball as Shashank Singh dropped it to deep mid-wicket and took the ball over the fence on the next ball. Thakur and Jadeja dismissed Chahar for 13 runs in the 18th over.

After this, Jadeja hit some important blows on Arshdeep by hitting a four and a six, followed by scoring 43 (26) runs on the fourth ball over long on, taking the visitors to 167/9 in 20 overs. Jadeja’s innings was very important considering the situation of the game. Prabhsimran Singh came to bat as an impact player for PBKS in place of Arshdeep, while Simarjeet Singh was introduced as the impact player for CSK in place of Rahane at the start of the second innings.
