Tata IPL 2024 Match 48, LSG vs MI – Match Report

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) registered a four-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. This is LSG’s sixth win in the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

LSG won the toss and decided to bowl first – making a few changes to their team. Ashton Turner, Naveen-ul-Haq and Mayank Yadav came into the team for him. MI brought back Gerald Coetzee in place of Luke Wood. LSG’s bowlers produced a good team performance to restrict the dangerous MI batting line-up to just 144 – with most of the damage coming in the powerplay.

Rohit Sharma started with a scoop to hit a four, but on the very next ball he hit it straight to the cover region off Mohsin Khan in the second over. Suryakumar Yadav also started well by hitting a six down the leg-side, but Marcus Stoinis responded with a wicket of his own as he teased him for room and sent it down the leg-side to the wicketkeeper for a single. In the last over of the powerplay, things got worse for MI when Tilak Verma was run out by Ravi Bishnoi. Hardik Pandya walked out and was out on the very first ball as Naveen’s ball went to the wicketkeeper. MI were in big trouble at 28 for four in six overs.

Nehal Wadhera and Ishan Kishan scripted a recovery of sorts for MI from that situation. Initially he had to struggle with the fast bowling of Mayank, who is returning after injury. He showed some attacking intent against his pace but Ishan also got a bit of luck when Turner missed a chance at deep square-leg.

The partnership was built slowly and 53 runs were added by the 14th over. Ishan (32 runs in 36 balls) was out when he got a leading edge on Bishnoi’s ball and was caught at short third-man. With the slog overs approaching, MI had decided to move on. When Mayank came to bowl the 15th over, Vadhera had scored 16 runs – which included two sixes and a four.

Vadhera and Tim David were trying to take MI to a good score with some hitting in the slog overs. Vadhera was out on the crucial score of 46 runs when Mohsin bowled him in the 18th over. Mayank returned to Castle Nabi in the next over but got injured after that ball and went off the field.

David played an important role in the slog overs by scoring 35 not out off 18 balls. David used the long handle and caught the fence four times – which included three fours and a six. This was a crucial innings as it took MI to 144.

LSG’s attack towards the target got off to a rocky start when Arshin Kulkarni was trapped LBW by Nuwan Thushara. In the first two overs, MI bowlers asked many questions to the batsmen. Thushara got movement along with her sling action. In the second over, Jasprit Bumrah bowled in the tight channel. Marcus Stoinis, who came in at No. 3, was on target when he bowled a yorker – and landed on the inside edge of the boundary.

LSG broke the tie in the fourth over when Stoinis hit two fours off Coetzee. KL Rahul made an impact when he dismissed Thushara in the next over. A total of 20 runs were scored in the over, in which Rahul hit one six and three fours. He hit a six down the leg side but the shot that stood out was the helicopter-like loft over mid-on which went for four runs. As soon as the powerplay ended, Stoinis hit Bumrah for a six on the ground. In no time, LSG were close to their fifty – which set them on course for victory after the early wicket.

Soon after the end of the powerplay, Rahul was out for 28 when he tried to hit Hardik to midwicket, but Nabi took a brilliant catch inches short of the boundary. After this, Stoinis and Hooda calmly took the innings towards the total score.

LSG lost Hooda and Stoinis in quick succession in the 14th and 15th overs, but they were on a good track. Stoinis returned after scoring a crucial 62 runs in 45 balls with the help of seven fours and two sixes.

Finally, Jasprit Bumrah increased the pressure when he restricted LSG to just one run in the 17th over. The pressure resulted in the fall of Turner in the next over when he attempted to scoop Coetzee’s delivery but was bowled.

LSG now needed 22 runs from 17. Ayush Badoni played a dot and then got a leg-bye for four down the leg-side, before a top-edging pull for another four. This reduced the pressure. Badoni was run out in the last over while trying to take the second run. However, Nicholas Pooran and Krunal Pandya ensured there were no further hindrances as LSG recovered from some difficult moments to seal the win in the last over.
