In his last Super 8 match ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026South Africa recorded a spectacular five-wicket win over Zimbabwe at the prestigious Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Chasing a competitive target of 154, the Proteas reached the finish line in just 17.5 overs, thanks to a brilliant innings from Dewald Brevis. The young star’s explosive innings tilted the contest firmly in South Africa’s favour, underscoring their Championship credentials.
Sikandar Raza takes Zimbabwe to a competitive score
Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza won the toss and elected to bat first, hoping to take advantage of the favorable afternoon conditions. However, early successes from South Africa’s pace attack kept the scoring under control during the powerplay. Zimbabwe scored 45 runs in the mandatory overs but lost important wickets at regular intervals.
Tadivanashe Marumani was out early, bowled by Kwena Mafaka for 7 runs. Brian Bennett showed his intent with a quickfire 15, but Anrich Nortje left him with little chance of a stoppage. Dion Myers struggled to gain momentum and lost ground to George Linde, leaving Zimbabwe’s score at 66/3.
The innings got stability from Sikandar Raza, who played a captaincy inning of 73 runs in 43 balls. His innings was laced with powerful stroke play, which included 8 fours and 4 sixes, which kept the scoreboard ticking. Raza formed useful partnerships, notably adding 38 runs with Myers and later a crucial 39-run partnership with Clive Madende.
Madande’s unbeaten 26 off 20 balls added vital runs late on, taking Zimbabwe to 153/7 at the end of 20 overs. South Africa’s bowlers fared poorly, with Mafaka and Corbin Bosch taking two wickets each, while Nortje, Linde and Lungi Ngidi contributed effectively. The Proteas maintained the pressure through disciplined bowling and fast fielding, and restricted Zimbabwe to modest scores on a batting-friendly surface.
Dewald Brevis inspires South Africa’s chase
South Africa had a very poor start while chasing the target. Quinton de Kock was out cheaply for a duck, dismissed by Sikandar Raza in the opening over. Captain Aiden Markram also struggled for fluency and was bowled by Raza for 4, reducing the Proteas to 14/2.
After this, Ryan Rickelton and Brewis took the innings forward by making an important partnership for the third wicket. Rickelton made a solid contribution of 31 runs in 22 balls before becoming the victim of Brad Evans. However, it was Brewis who grabbed the headlines by scoring 42 runs in just 18 balls at an astonishing rate of 233.33.
Brewis’ innings was full of innovation and power. He dismantled the Zimbabwe bowling attack with a fearless stroke game, targeting both pace and spin. His aggressive approach in the middle overs changed the momentum decisively. Even after David Miller was out for 22, the required rate remained easily within reach.
Raza attempted to pull Zimbabwe back into the contest with figures of 3/29, but the damage was already done. Tristan Stubbs remained calm with an unbeaten 21, while Linde finished the match with an unbeaten 30. Their unbroken partnership of 53 runs was ensured South Africa crossed the victory limit with 13 balls remaining.
