Sixers initially named James Hopes as head coach of their men’s team, but the role became vacant following his decision to return to Queensland and join the Brisbane Heat. Her transition into coaching saw her take charge at the University of Queensland before joining Cricket New South Wales as the women’s coach in 2025. Clarke made an immediate impact and took the team forward Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) Ultimate and earned recognition for his player-management skills and tactical approach.
His previous experience working with Matthew Mott with the Sixers also means he understands the team culture, expectations and playing group. Hopefully this introduction will help ensure a smooth transition as the franchise prepares for another title challenge. The appointment also highlights the increasing value of diverse coaching backgrounds in modern cricket, with Clarke becoming one of the few head coaches to have progressed through sports psychology before making his mark on the coaching circuit.

Sixers aim for WBBL title after near miss last season
Clarke inherits a team that enjoyed an impressive campaign in the last edition of the WBBL. The Sixers finished second on the points table with 13 points from 10 matches and emerged as one of the most consistent teams in the competition during the league stage. However, their title aspirations ended at the Challenger, where they lost to Perth Scorchers Women, falling one step short of reaching the final.
Despite that disappointment, the Sixers are entering the new season with a solid foundation and a team capable of challenging for a championship once again.
