There could be a major change in India’s T20I squad soon, as serious discussions are reportedly going on over the future of captain Suryakumar Yadav. Just a few months after leading India to the T20 World Cup title, Suryakumar Yadav is now facing the toughest phase of his career.
His poor form with the bat and fitness concerns have led to questions being raised about his place in the team and his captaincy. Suryakumar Yadav’s future will be one of the biggest issues up for discussion when the selectors meet to pick India’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England.

Suryakumar Yadav’s T20I future is in serious danger
According to the Times of India report, Suryakumar Yadav’s recent performance has forced the national selectors to think about the future. The 35-year-old has been struggling for runs for a long time and a troublesome wrist injury has made matters worse.

It is being said that the selectors are keeping a close eye on the situation and are now considering whether it is the right time to move in a new direction. And the biggest indication of this was Suryakumar’s exclusion from the probables for the upcoming Asian Games.

However, some people in the Indian think tank believe that Suryakumar Yadav, who won the T20 World Cup for the country, deserves more patience and support. He believes that the stylish batsman has earned the right to get more opportunities before taking any drastic decisions.
Shreyas Iyer has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Suryakumar Yadav.
However, many believe that India should start planning for the future now. With the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next T20 World Cup approaching, many believe that the team needs a long-term captain who can build a stable core over the next few years.
One of the strongest contenders is Shreyas Iyer. The Mumbai batsman was already appointed vice-captain for the Afghanistan ODIs and is seen as a potential leader for India’s white-ball teams. If Suryakumar loses his place in the T20 team, Iyer is likely to take the No. 4 batting position.
Another serious option is Axar Patel. The all-rounder served as the vice-captain during India’s T20 World Cup campaign and has impressed many with his calm approach and consistency. His experience and all-round skills make him a strong candidate.
Young wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan, who recently led Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026, is also being seen as a future leader. Sanju Samson is also part of the discussion. The final decision will be taken by chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir will soon take an important decision on India’s T20I future
They have worked together on many important decisions, but some reports suggest that there have been differences of opinion on some selection and team matters in the past. Therefore the upcoming selection meeting is expected to be very important.
The Times of India quoted a source as saying, “Ajit is a very strong chief selector, one of the strongest in charge. He has taken some tough decisions keeping the future in mind and he, along with his panel, has made a plan for the T20 captaincy and the strategy going forward. That is why Shreyas was appointed vice-captain in the ODIs and he was in the squad for the last bilateral series played by India before the T20 World Cup.”
He further added, “Is he the coach’s choice now? Or does he have someone else in mind? And will he be the selectors’ choice? These are the important points of discussion. Axar Patel was the vice-captain for the World Cup; Ishan Kishan has the age, form and leadership ability; and then Sanju Samson’s name is in the news. There is a recent bias in Samson’s favour, but his inconsistency has not pleased key stakeholders.”
