Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav has given his verdict on India’s catching efficiency, which has slipped from their previous best in the shortest format of the game. As his team prepares to defend their T20 World Cup title, the captain looks determined to improve.
India, the world’s best fielding unit, has sunk to a new low in recent times. During the era of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, this sentiment was used to boost the morale of the players during the most mundane phase of the game.
Even in the Asia Cup, the Indian fielders faced trouble in Dubai as they dropped 12 catches, the most by any team in the competition, and left a blemish on an otherwise effective campaign.
“According to me, catches will be missed” – Suryakumar Yadav’s blunt decision on India’s poor fielding
India’s fielding was not very good; Catching in particular has been one of the areas where India have struggled. It appears that Suryakumar is supporting his fielders with a view to improving their attributes.
Suryakumar Yadav said, “According to me, catches will be missed. If you are a fielder, if you go for a catch, you will miss the catch. Similarly, if you are a batsman, you will be out. Or if you are a bowler, you will try to bowl the ball in the right way, but you will not get the wicket. All these are part of the game.”
“But I think what you do after that is more important. Today was an optional session. But today everyone came out on the field. So it means the team is really working towards doing something special.”
Suryakumar Yadav said, “If you do one thing right you can win the match.”
Suryakumar Yadav has also told that any team can take advantage on the field and it can win the match for them. He also confirmed that the entire Indian team is working hard to improve their fielding and emerge as the dominant team on the field again.
,And this is one department that I have said we have to work hard on if we want to be the best fielding unit in the world. You see how many teams take good catches, do good fielding, win matches on the basis of fielding. So if the batting is light or the bowling is here and there, but with fielding if you do one thing right then you can win the match. That’s why we are working hard.
“We’re working hard on it. But there’s no guarantee you’ll make 25 catches today [in training]You won’t miss it again tomorrow. It can be missed. It’s part of the game. But how much you want the ball to come to you, how you try to create that intention and opportunity, that’s important to me. There is no problem if the catch is missed. Obviously, there is disappointment. But at the same time, if you’re trying, there’s no problem.”
“There is only one department – fielding – where everyone comes together” – Suryakumar Yadav
For the Indian T20I captain, it seemed to be more about mood than fielding methods; It is about the player’s determined efforts on the field which helps them take some catches and stop the flow of runs.
“According to me, there is only one department – fielding – where everyone comes together. Otherwise, everyone’s batting skills are individual. Bowling skills are individual,” Suryakumar Yadav said, adding that fielding is a team effort, which requires participation from the entire team.
He said, “But there is only fielding, where 11 people are on the field together. So it is important to create an atmosphere there, no matter what is going on in the match. If the other team is on top, you field well, you can win the game. So I say when you are on the field, create an atmosphere together.”
