Shreyas Iyer will be appointed for T20I captaincy: Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is over and the focus has now shifted towards international cricket. India will host Afghanistan for a one-off Test starting Saturday and will then play a three-match ODI series against the same opponents. The Men in Blue have a few matches on the tour to Ireland and England in June and July.

Ahead of tours outside the country, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief selector Ajit Agarkar is reportedly planning to change India’s T20I captain with the future in mind. According to reports coming from Sportstak, Suryakumar Yadav has been confirmed to be dropped ahead of the Ireland series as the World Cup-winning captain is in poor form.

Suryakumar Yadav is certain to be dismissed

Despite winning the T20 World Cup 2026 with India, SKY has not been able to perform well as a batsman, which has led to the decision to make a change in leadership. The selectors’ committee believes that the current T20I captain will not be able to continue in the 2028 T20 World Cup and Olympics.

With increasing age, the kind of leadership ability that Suryakumar Yadav has in the shortest format of the game is unmatched. The Men in Blue have a lot of talent and a captain who can lead the team well in the upcoming series against Ireland and beyond.

Shreyas Iyer will lead India!

According to reports from various sources, Shreyas Iyer is the frontrunner to become the captain of the Indian team. Team India’s ODI vice-captain will now have a chance to lead the team in the shortest format of the game for the first time. The selectors are now looking for a long-term solution with the new captain leading India in the next two T20 World Cups.

Shreyas Iyer’s IPL experience and runs give him an advantage, but Tilak Verma and Ishan Kishan are also two names who are rumored to be in the race for captaincy. However, the selectors will talk to Gautam Gambhir before finalizing the new captain.

Why can Shreyas Iyer become a great captain for India?

Shreyas Iyer has been one of the finest white-ball cricketers for India in recent years. This Mumbai batsman has shown amazing consistency in the ODI format as well as in T20. But his feud with Gambhir has seen him dropped from the T20 squad despite leading three franchises to IPL finals and winning one in 2024.

Shreyas Iyer has had an excellent record in the IPL in recent times, but this season his team failed to qualify for the playoffs despite remaining unbeaten in the first 7 matches. The 31-year-old has had an amazing IPL record as captain, with an all-time impressive win percentage of over 59%.

If Iyer does not take up the leadership role, one of Tilak and Ishan will be in contention; Otherwise, either one of the two will be Iyer’s deputy for India in the shortest format. Since Ajit Agarkar and his men are yet to announce the squad for the Asian Games, India will send its first-choice team to defend the gold medal it won in 2022.
