The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning upcoming series including the Asian Games, where India will play as the defending champions.
The 2026 Asian Games are scheduled to begin on September 19. Before that, the board will have to announce the team, which will be in the campaign to defend the gold medal earned by the team under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Suryakumar Yadav is not in the extended list of players
According to the report of Amar Ujala, BCCI has finalized the list of 30 probable players for the Asian Games to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Reports suggest that T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is not included in the list of 30 probable players.
This means the Men in Blue will defend their title under a new leader. Ruturaj Gaikwad, under whom the Indian cricket team won the title, is in the extended list of players.
This list includes most of the major players
It is being claimed that the probables include 13 cricketers from the 15-member T20 World Cup winning team. The list includes star players like Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Sanju Samson, Tilak Verma and many other prominent players. If the claims are to be believed, the board will select the team from among these 30 players.
Emerging players also include Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Yash Thakur, Vipraj Nigam, Anukul Roy and Harsh Dubey. Suryavanshi’s name in the list suggests that the BCCI may give the southpaw, who has taken the ongoing IPL 2026 season by storm, his first cap for the senior men’s cricket team.
The report further states that Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir may skip the Asian Games, as the team will have to face West Indies for the ODI series at the same time. India will face West Indies for a 3-match ODI series starting on September 27 and ending on October 3.
Will Team India get a new coach?
The ODI team will be led by captain Shubman Gill. The board will have to announce a separate team for this series. If Gautam Gambhir does not play in the Asian Games, then who will be the coach of the team in Japan?
According to the report, in place of Gambhir, BCCI may choose National Cricket Academy (NCA) cricket head VVS Laxman as the coach for the Asian Games. However, nothing has been finalized yet. First of all, BCCI will have to select the final team for the tournament from the list of 30 players.
