Team India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has revealed his biggest regret in his cricket career after guiding the team in the Asia Cup 2025 in the United Arab Emirates. Suryakumar said that he wanted to play under the captaincy of the great wicketkeeper-son MS Dhoni for India, but never got a chance.

The middle-order batsman made his international debut under Virat Kohli in 2021 against England, but did not get a chance to bat in that match. Suryakumar’s career and former captain never overlap. In particular, the veterans had already retired, until Yadava started for the Indian team.

“First, I always wanted to get an opportunity when he was the captain of India. But I never found it. I looked at him behind the stump whenever I played against him,” Suryakumar said during Jito Connect 2025.

He said, “He has been very good. One thing I have learned from him, when I have played against him, he has to rest in all pressure situations, he looks around the game, looks around what is happening, looks around it and then takes a call,” he said.

Suryakumar and Dhoni have been mostly on the opposite teams in the IPL. Dhoni played for Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Super Junts, while Suryakumar represented Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians.

The only example he was on the same side during the 2021 T20 World Cup, when Dhoni served as a patron for Team India and was part of the Suryakumar Squad.

Suryakumar Yadav praised Virat Kohli for his ability to bring the best among the players. He described Virat as a demanding leader, who carries the border forward, stating that he has a high-energy and unique approach, both on and outside the field and outside.

“I think I made my debut under Virat Bhai as captain. I think Virat Bhai is a very difficult task master. He pushes your boundaries, and he wants the best. I mean, all the captains want the best from all the players, but he was full of energy on the field and was also out of the field. He was a bit different.”

The 35 -year -old talked about his experiences under Rohit Sharma. He remembered playing under Rohit for Mumbai Indians and Team India. Suryakumar also said that Rohit creates a positive atmosphere and always keeps his door open for the teammates.

“Then Rohit Bhai, under whom I played a lot of cricket for IPL franchise and India. He is a person around him, an inspiration for all youths. His door was open to all 24/7. It is a different quality that I learned from him and other captains,” he concluded.
