Suryakumar Yadav reveals on-field argument with Daryl Mitchell in T20 World Cup final

Team India won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. They achieved three milestones after winning the trophy by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final on 8 March. The Men in Blue became the first team to win three trophies and back-to-back trophies. Suryakumar Yadav’s team also became the first country to win the trophy on home ground.

Now, the players are enjoying their short holidays before joining their respective franchises in the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL). Ahead of the IPL squad, the India captain revealed the heated incident that happened between Arshdeep Singh and Daryl Mitchell in the final.

Suryakumar Yadav apologized to Daryl Mitchell

Suryakumar Yadav said he apologized to the New Zealand batsman after Arshdeep Singh hit him with the ball during the 2026 T20 World Cup. The incident occurred when Arshdeep was hit for two sixes, and later a ball was dot which went straight to the bowler and he angrily threw it back, which hit Mitchell.

After the ball was hit, the New Zealand batsman became angry and Arshdeep left without apologizing. Sky immediately went to the batsman and apologized. Immediately after the match, Arshdeep and Mitchell shared a nice moment. The match replays also showed the fast bowler apologizing to Mitchell after Suryakumar’s intervention.

This happens sometimes- Suryakumar Yadav

However, Arshdeep Singh was also fined 15% of his match fee. Now, in a recent interview with PTI, Suryakumar Yadav revealed what exactly happened during the match.

Suryakumar Yadav told PTI, “In the heat of the moment kabhi kabhi ho gaya hai (it happens sometimes). At that time you don’t completely understand what’s happening. But later, I told Paaji, that it doesn’t happen. Then he talked to Michelle and it was a light moment.”

“He took it in stride. But it was very important for me to go and tell Daryl Mitchell myself, because as a leader, the example you set on the field is also very important. So I went and told him (Mitchell) the same thing, if Arshdeep did it intentionally, I’m sorry. And if he didn’t do it intentionally, I’m sorry too.”

Gautam Gambhir is in full support of Arshdeep Singh

India’s national cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir had a different opinion on the matter. The head coach supported Arshdeep’s aggressive attitude and rejected the need for any apology.

Gambhir believes that such reactions and actions occur during high-risk games, especially after being hit for two consecutive fours, and said that he would welcome more such reactions from his players.

He further added that representing the country with such intensity is always welcomed, and the head coach also praised Arshdeep for his apology as a kind gesture. He made it clear that it was not necessary to do so, saying that ‘there are no friends on the cricket pitch.’

Arshdeep will next be seen in the IPL for Punjab Kings (PBKS) and this time he would like to take the team to the finals and win the trophy, as they failed to win the title after losing to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the finals.
