World Cup success not enough for Suryakumar Yadav to secure leadership role
After this Suryakumar took over the captaincy of T20I Rohit Sharma Retired from the shortest format after India’s T20 World Cup win in 2024. Since then, he has been entrusted with the responsibility of leading the relatively young Indian team through a transitional phase.
Under his leadership, India achieved the ultimate goal by clinching their third T20 World Cup title in March 2026. However, reports suggest that the selectors have looked beyond expectations and assessed the bigger picture including the batsman’s recent performances and long-term future within the team.

While Suryakumar’s captaincy record remains impressive, his form with the bat has become a matter of concern. Considered one of the most destructive T20 batsmen of his generation, the Mumbai star has struggled to replicate his best performances over the past two years.
The 2026 IPL season further highlighted those difficulties. Representing the Mumbai franchise, Suryakumar could score only 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76. Although he finished the campaign with a half-century against Rajasthan, his total returns fell well short of expectations.
Those figures have reportedly influenced the selectors’ thinking, especially as India look to build a team capable of remaining competitive during the next World Cup cycle. It appears that concerns over consistency and form have overshadowed his recent success under captaincy.
